  2. “Geo-Education for a sustainable geothermal heating and cooling market” Project: IEE/07/581/S12.499061 Duration: 30 months from 1 September 2008 to 28 February 2011 Project aim To develop the training of professionals involved in Ground Source Heat Pump installations (GSHP) Target groups: Designers (feasibility study including geology) Drillers (who make the boreholes and insert the tubes) To develop European Education programme to got towards the certification of geothermal heating and cooling installations.

Project partners: European organizations: European Federation of Geologists European Geothermal Energy Council Research centers: Arsenal Research, Austria BRGM, France Private sector: GT Skills, Ireland Geoexchange Society, Romania Universities: Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, Spain University of Lund, Sweden Newcastle University, UK

DIRECTIVE 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energyfrom renewable sources (RES ) April 2009 • Article 2: "energy from renewable sources" means energy from renewable non-fossil sources: wind, solar, geothermal, aerothermal, hydrothermal and ocean energy, hydropower, biomass, landfill gas, sewage treatment plant gas and biogases; “geothermal energy” means energy stored in form of heat beneath the surface of solid earth; • Art. 14 (3) Member States shall ensurethat certification schemes or equivalent qualification schemes become or are available by 31 December 2012 for installers of … shallowgeothermalsystemsand heatpumps.

GEOTRAINET Programfrom September 2011 OBJECTIVES FOR THE FUTURE • Geotrainet training in all EU countries • Establish a European Education Committee and National Committees • Support National bodies involved in training and certification • Develop and implement a European accreditation/certification structure Next meeting on 14/02/2012 in Brussels (REH)
