  1. ULIXES “Unraveling and exploiting Mediterranean sea microbial diversity and ecology for xenobiotic’s and pollutants’ clean up” EU Project N. 266473 – FP7 Theme 2 – CP-FP-SICA 2nd Steering Committee meeting Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012 WP4 Establishment of prokaryote collections, and WP9 ULIXES dissemination and exploitation strategies Partner 2. Laboratoire Microorganismes & Biomolécules Actives Faculté des Sciences de Tunis, Université de Tunis El Manar

  2. Implication of UTUN staff in ULIXES WPs WP4: Collections of microorganismes and metabolites (36) WP3: Microbial diversity exploration in the MedSea sites (19) WP9: Results dissemination and exploitation (10) WP2: Sampling and characterization of the MedSea sites (6) WP8: Product/processes testing and field bioremediation (4) 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  3. WP2. Sampling and characterization of the Mediterranean Sea sites Common procedures for sampling and for sample exchange The protocol books available on the website are those prepared by TUC, UGENT, UMIL and CSIC. The other partners are invited to send their protocols. Collection and characterization of samples from polluted sites Partners are invited to send their samples to UMIL, BANGOR and UGENT (amounts of sediments, waters?) Organization of the three cruises Cruise agenda is needed to circulate to all partners (IAMC) Geochemical characterization of the target sites (D2.2 – M20, sept 2012) More efforts need to be done to standardize tests and parameters / characters to be identified. 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  4. WP3. Microbial diversity exploration in the Mediterranean Sea sites • Detailed description of the microbial diversity related to the polluted sites (D3.1 –M15: April 2012) • Which approaches/methods should be considered to have complementary/coherent results? (DGGE, libraries, ARISA, T-RFLP..) • Microbial diversity map and establishment of a complete database of the microorganisms (MO) (D3.4 – M36) • Excel table or better, a computer database/software • Results from WP2/WP3: comparison of different microniches; evaluation of the quantitative importance of MO; identification of the active microbiotafraction • Target determination in WP4: sites/ microorganisms/ pollutants and metabolites • Yet no clear and complete data to return to the sites for other sampling for confirmation / recovery of specific microorganisms. 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  5. WP4. Establishment of collections of microbial isolates and metabolites • WP4 aims to isolate, identify and characterize microbes with degrading activities and metabolic futures for potential application in Bioremediation. • different enrichments and culturing techniques were achieved: non selective rich media or mineral media supplemented with pollutant mixtures (hydrocarbons, crude oil, naphtha, diesel, kerosene, PCBs…). • No Alcanivorax, Cycloclasticus spp.? 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  6. WP4. Establishment of collections of microbial isolates and metabolites • Mixtures and pure cultures are currently tested and screened for the degradation of specific molecules (HC, chlorinated compounds..) and activities (Biofilm formation, Biosurfactants, enzymes production..). • Biosurfactants: applied and fundamental aspects: concentration of the efforts (TUC, UNIBO, UTUN..) • Overall results of WP4 will enable the selection of pure strains, mix of different strains and consortia / Enriched cultures that will be used in WP8 for microcosm and mesocosm bioremediation applications. • Complete strains characterization / Identification • UMIL about 200 isolates • TUC 50 • MUCSAT 89 • IAMC 50 • UTUN 125 • YU 125 • Others…. 700 isolates 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  7. WP4. Establishment of collections of microbial isolates and metabolites Depending on the targeted pollutant, 4 collections (including 3 sub-collections) are currently constituted the 4 tasks of WP4: Sampling protocols, samples, enrichments, isolates, strain mixtures, consortia...and data have to be shared between partners ...We are ready to send/exchange isolates / young researchers 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  8. WP9. Result dissemination and exploitation • WP9 aims to: • Evaluate the ULIXES fundamental and applied research results • Efficiently disseminate the results (scientific, industrials and stakeholders) • Exploit the results for potential field applications in the MedSea to transfer, disperse, and facilitate the knowledge and technical advantages, to researchers, SMEs, and the public at regional, national and international level. 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  9. WP9. Result dissemination and exploitation • WP9 is structured in 3 main tasks: • Task 9.1. Evaluation of the scientific value of the results and their potential in full field applications for bioremediation in the Mediterranean Sea basin. • Task 9.2. Dissemination action for the project valorization, toward the scientific community, the industrial public and the managing and regulatory stakeholders • Task 9.3. Preparation of a dissemination plan 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  10. WP9. Result dissemination and exploitation Done Urgent An e-mail will be sent asap

  11. WP9. Result dissemination and exploitation Task 9.1. Evaluation of the scientific value of the results and their potential for applications  Needs for the valorization of the project products: i) Use of the microbial collections in current processes for bioremediation of polluted marine waters and sediments. ii) Application of the acquired process in managing polluted marine waters and sediments. iii) Whether and how the selected microorganisms and the developed processes can be implemented in tailored bioremediation techniques for in situ or ex situ treating iv) potential of application and treatment of pollutants in other matrices (e.g. soil or freshwater sediments) v) Update of the degrading microorganism diversity database and development of the Biodegmicroship. 2nd Steering Committee meeting. Mazara del Vallo, Italy – January 22nd 2012

  12. WP9. Result dissemination and exploitation Task 9.2. Dissemination action for the project valorization  to efficiently disseminate the project results and products, towards the international scientific public, stakeholders and potential interested industrial and socio-economic entities 1) Construction and update of the project website (hosted by UMIL): continuous accessible information, online archive, podcasts for public, announcements (seminars, workshops, conferences..), scientific forum, e-conferences 2) One-year regular electronic/hard copy newsletter to stakeholders, industrial and socioeconomic entities 3) ULIXES leaflet/brochure (downloadable PDF and hard copy) in English, French and Arabic versions aiming to present the activities and the modern advanced technologies used in the project. 4) Constitution of a Stakeholder Advisory Board (SAB) to promote dissemination of the project results and to enhance interactions ULIXES-Steakholders. 5) Research and review articles in well-known scientific international journals 2nd Steering Committee meeting.
