  1. Istanbul +10 Task Force: Findings and recommendations Bonnie Keith Presentation to the Executive Committee 5 November 2010

  2. Actions needed by Executive Committee: • Select the meeting venue for 2011 Annual Membership Meeting or, alternatively, provide feedback to Istanbul+10 Task Force for final decision among two options provided. • Provide feedback to the Istanbul+10 Task Force on its formulation of the Istanbul+10 concept and identification of suggested activities.

  3. The Task Force The Istanbul +10 Initiative Task Force was formed to involve the Coalition membership in shaping the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Meeting the Challenge conference and further the Coalition’s strategic goals and objectives. Membership in the Task Force comprises representatives from the Coalition’s three Working Groups, two cross-cutting forums, and the Coalition Secretariat.

  4. Objectives of Task Force • To formulate a goal-statement of what the Istanbul+10 Initiative encompasses, based on a set of desired outcomes (e.g. celebrate the past, identify lessons learned, serve as a springboard for the future) • To identify the activities required to achieve these outcomes, including recommendations for commemorating Istanbul+10 within the framework of the Coalition’s annual meeting • To deliver to the Secretariat a series of recommendations for presentation to the Executive Committee on 5 November

  5. Istanbul +10 Initiative Goal Statement The Istanbul +10 initiative honors the legacy of the 2001 conference, “Meeting the Reproductive Health Challenge”, held in Istanbul. This conference was a watershed event, giving contraceptive security a place on the agendas of reproductive health (RH) programs. Istanbul +10 will review the efforts undertaken by the global RH community towards achieving commodity security by reflecting on our products, assessing the systems and tools developed in the interim, and determining how to build upon these results in support of MDG 5. The current environment offers opportunities for RH commodity security to be positioned as a cornerstone of development. In concert with other Coalition initiatives, Istanbul +10 will celebrate the collaborative efforts over the last decade to bring our community together, mobilize the community to face the challenges that remain, and renew our commitment to the impact and sustainability of our work for 2015 and beyond.

  6. Desired Outcomes Task Force members identified the following:

  7. Criteria for Choosing a Venue Task Force members felt that the commemoration of Istanbul and pursuit of Coalition business should be combined in a single annual meeting. • Countries in need of Coalition assistance • Countries where supply, rather than demand, is the driver inhibiting RHCS • Where the Coalition annual meeting and Istanbul +10 gathering could impact country policies (bring change) • Focus on technical stakeholders and implementation, with policy-makers still attending meetings • There is a need to raise awareness about RHCS • Country ready and willing to make changes towards achieving RHCS • Coalition focus country or member • Potential to further strategic and/or programmatic goals of Coalition • Original Istanbul country • Potential to achieve the HANDtoHAND metric

  8. Assessing the Options

  9. Ethiopia

  10. Ghana

  11. Suggested Activities under the Initiative • Series of publications: Re-release of Donor Gap paper, case studies, re-publish original 2001 background documents • Innovation Fund: Outcomes from PAI project, new projects focused on country-level activities • New studies/reports: Evaluation of supplies tools developed since 2001; consistent calculation of unmet need trends in representative countries; Undertake country Donor-Gaps assessments; identify next steps for “success” • Country-level support: Funding to carry out recommendations from 2011 meeting/Istanbul +10 activities, key stakeholder consultations to mobilize decision-makers • Meetings and presentations: Support country representation and presentation at relevant conferences and panels (building on and in collaboration with PAI’s work supported by Innovation Fund; activities throughout the year hosted by the Coalition
