  2. Background • John Wayne Gacy was born in Chicago, Illinois, the second of three children born to John Stanley Gacy • Gacy was of Polish and Danish heritage • Series of killings committed between 1972 and 1978 • AKA “The Killer Clown”

  3. Premature Characteristics • As a child he was overweight and un-athletic. • He was ordered to avoid all sports due to a heart condition • Suffered blackouts, seizures, and a burst appendix

  4. Childhood • Endured disdainful accusations of being "dumb and stupid". • Tolerated a difficult relationship with his father, an alcoholic, who was physically abusive toward his wife and children • At the age of nine Gacy was molested by a family friend • Gacy was an average student with few friends who was an occasional target for mockery and bullying

  5. Adult Life • Failed to graduate from high school • At the age of 18 Gacy became involved in politics • He later worked as a mortuary attendant for three months and observed embalming dead bodies • Graduated from Northwestern Business Collegein 1963 • Gacy married Marilyn Myers in September 1964

  6. First Offenses • In August 1967, Gacy committed his first known sexual assault upon a teenage boy named Donald Voorhees • In March 1968, Donald Voorhees reported to his father that Gacy had sexually assaulted him; Gacy received a 10-year sentence

  7. Parole • Gacy was granted 12 month probation • Became short cook at a restaurant • February 12 , 1971- Gacy charged with sexually assaulting boy • Youth claimed Gacy had lured him into his car at Chicago bus terminal • Complaint dismissed when youth did not show up for court

  8. The Businessman • In 1972, Gacy quit his job as a cook and started his own construction business, PDM Contractors ('Painting, Decorating and Maintenance') • Gacy met and was photographed with then First Lady Rosalynn Carter on May 6, 1978

  9. Relationships • Marilyn Myers • Lasted 4.1 years • Marilyn gave birth to two children in Iowa • Michael- 1967 • Christine- 1968 • Carole Hoff • Former High School friend • They married July 1st 1972 • Moved into Gacy’s Mom’s house

  10. Murders • On January 2, 1972 Gacy’s approximate 33 murders began • Raped and murdered 33 young adults and children in his own house • Buried 22 of the bodies in a crawl space under his house • About 12 more bodies were found around the area of his house either decomposed or un-recognizable

Investigation • An owner of a pharmacy overheard Gacy talking to 15 year old boy Robert Jerome Piest about a “job opportunity” • On the same day Piest went missing… leading suspicion on Gacy • A search warrant was issued on Gacy’s house • Police found various driver's licenses, handcuffs, a two-by-four with holes drilled in the ends, books on homosexuality and pederasty,a syringe, clothing too small for Gacy, and a 6mm Brevettata starter pistol

Investigation Continued • Gacy was beginning to show visible signs of strain as a result of the constant surveillance: he was unshaven, looked tired, appeared anxious and was drinking heavily • Police issued a second search warrant • Within minutes, they had uncovered putrefied flesh and a human arm bone

Arrest and confession • After being informed that police had found human remains in his crawl space he would now face murder charges • In the early hours of December 22, 1978, Gacy confessed to police that since 1972, he had committed approximately 25 to 30 murders • He falsely claimed they were teenage male runaways or male prostitutes

  14. Search For Victims • Gacy drew a diagram of his basement to show where the bodies were buried • Between December 22 and December 29, 27 bodies were recovered from his crawl space; only 22 were recognized • 29 total bodies found on property • In April 1979, Gacy's vacant house was demolished.

  15. trial • Gacy had attempted to convince the doctors he was suffering from a multiple Personality Disorder, but failed • The jury found Gacy guilty of the thirty-three charges of murder for which he had been brought to trial; he was also found guilty of sexual assault • Gacy was sentenced with the death penalty and the initial date of execution was set for June 2, 1980
