  2. Problem • The problem asked when developing this experiment was: How do different tempos of music affect the human heart rate? • Will there be a significant change from the initial pulse rate to the rate when listening to fast tempo music?

  3. Research • Why does this happen? • The brain • Tempo of the music • Neurological pulse • Breathing pattern • Replication of the rhythm

Research cont.. • Music affects heart rate and breathing • Slow tempo is relaxing and slows the heart rate • Fast music speeds respiration and heart rate • 20- 30 minutes of listening a day- lower blood pressure • Faster rhythm increases the heart rate • Background in the arts may alter the heart rate • Perception of pain

  5. Hypothesis • If the tempo of the music is slow, then the heart rate will be slow. If the tempo is fast, then the heart rate will be fast. • A heart beats faster when a person is scared or excited.

  6. Materials • 10 Human subjects • Electronic Pulse Monitor • Clock • IPod or Radio

  8. Variables • Independent: Tempo of the music • Dependent: The heart rate • Constants: How long the subject rested before listening, how long subject listened, where the pulse was taken, number of songs listened to, age of subjects

  9. Control • The heart rate at rest • The one variable that was changed in order to test the affect of music on the heart rate

  10. Procedure • Let subject rest for 3 minutes • Take their initial pulse • Subject listens to music for 3 minutes • Take pulse and record • Subject rests for 3 minutes • Repeat these steps with 3 different tempos of music (slow, medium and fast) and 10 test subjects

  11. Conclusion • The hypothesis was not supported- overall there was no significant difference between the initial to slow and the initial to fast heart rates • The heart rate increased with faster tempos of music • The initial pulse of the subject was usually the lowest

  12. Future Testing • Larger sample size- 20 people • Quicker intervals- 30 seconds to a minute • Test blood pressure • Longer rest between listening
