  1. Welcome to Camp Ockanickon

  2. Camp Ockanickon • The property is located in Medford, NJ on a beautiful wilderness site of lakes and forests nestled in the Pinelands.

  3. The Cabins • Wood cabins • Cabins have room for 8 people • Cabin assignments will not be given until the day that students leave for camp • No requests for cabin mates will be taken* • Sorry, no room service available!!

  4. Groups • Students will be divided into cabins (6-7 students and 1-2 chaperones per cabin). Cabins can sleep 8 people. • All cabins will be assigned a Tribe. • The 7 Tribes are APACHE, BLACKFEET, CHEROKEE, DAKOTA, ERIE, FOX, and LENAPE • Tribes will travel together for most activities. Each Tribe will have about 30-35 students and 8-9 chaperones.

Groups:FAQ • Most common question: Why can’t you put me with my friends? • 175 students- Impossible!! • Computer program randomly creates cabin assignments. • How your day is spent: Daytime: with tribe (30-35 other students) Evening: with camp (all 175 students) Late Night: with cabin (go to bed!!!)

  6. Bathrooms/Showers • Separate men/women bathrooms • Clean facilities • Separate shower stalls • Close to cabin areas • Boys and girls will also have separate cabin areas

  8. Orienteering • Students will learn to use a compass to find direction • Students will go on a “nature walk” through the woods using a compass on the final day of camp • Presented by Rush School Teachers

  9. Art • Students will create mementos from their camp experience • Presented by Mr. Carroll

  10. Initiatives • Students will learn the values of teamwork through team building and cooperative activities • Presented by Rush Staff

  11. Pond Study • Students will examine the various creatures that can be found in the ponds of the Pine Barrens • Presented by Mrs. Bronecke and Mrs. Rutkowski

  12. Plant Study • Students will examine the plant life of the Pine Barrens • Presented by Rush School Teachers

  13. Challenge Course • Students will complete various activities involving trust and courage • Presented by camp staff and attended by Rush School Teachers

  14. Other Activities and Shows Include: Swimming Animal Wonders Athletics "Do You Know More Than a 5th Grader" Astronomy Dance Party

Sample Schedule 7:00- Wake up 8:00-8:45- Breakfast 9:00-10:00- Plant Study 10:15-11:15- Boating 11:30-12:30- Clean up & Lunch 12:45-1:45- Art 2:00-3:00- Swimming 3:00-4:00-Athletics 4:00-6:30- Showers and Dinner 6:45-7:45- Evening Activity 8:00-9:00- Astronomy 9:00-9:15 – Snack  9:15-10:15- Animal Wonders 10:15-11:00- Clean up and lights out

Food • Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and nighttime snack will be served • Various meals are served, including scrumptious cheeseburgers, homemade pizza, delicious baked chicken, crisp vegetables, fries, fresh salads, etc. • Students will be expected to help clean up after every meal. Students should leave the cafeteria clean!

  17. Emergencies • A nurse will be on duty 24 hours a day • Please make sure the health slip/ permission form was filled out accurately so we know who needs medication and at what time

  18. Safety • Many CPR Certified staff present • Dozens of Camp Ockanickon Staff • 15-20 Cinnaminson Teaching Staff • Fifth Grade Teachers • 40-60 Parent Chaperones • 24-hour nurse • Medford Lakes Police Dept. • Officers from Cinnaminson and surrounding communities

Students must stay with chaperone, cabin mates, and tribe There is to be NO switching of cabins or chaperones Students must obey ALL rules of the campground and the school while at camp Consequences can and will include: Certain privileges may be taken away Not allowed to participate in activities May be sent home Behavior

  20. What is expected... • Show courtesy to all camp staff, chaperones and teachers • Directions should be followed • All school rules apply at camp • Be mindful of the environment and wildlife • Cooperation and Teamwork is a must • HAVE FUN!!!

  21. More Information • Departure and arrival procedures will be explained a few weeks before we leave for camp • If your parents want to chaperone, they must return the chaperone form as soon as possible! • No student cell phones • No ipods or other electronics

  22. Frequently Asked Questions • Who will supervise the students? There will be dozens of adults supervising the students. We will have one or two parent chaperones per five students, the fifth grade teachers, activity teachers/staff, and Camp Ockanickon staff.  • Who will the students travel with during the day? The students will travel in groups known as tribes.  The tribes each have about 30 students and 8-10 chaperones.  They will follow a schedule and complete the activities listed above.  For certain activities, tribes may be combined.  With the groups being so big, students have a chance to spend time with old friends and make some new ones.  • Where will the students stay at night? Students will stay in cabins with their chaperones.  Cabins are equipped with four bunk beds that sleep eight.  Students should bring a sleeping bag and comfortable pillow.  Students are not permitted to leave the cabins after lights out except for the bathroom.  There is no raiding other cabins.  Breaking this rule will result in being sent home.  • Can I visit my child at camp? Parents are not allowed to visit camp.  Enjoy the peace and quiet of home.  • What if my child is afraid of staying away from home? We hear this every year.  In most cases, their fears disappear when they arrive at camp.  The schedule is filled with fun and educational activities.  There is very little "down-time" throughout the day.  They are constantly surrounded by other students and adults.  • What if my child needs medication? Medication must be turned in to Mrs. Weller as early as possible before we leave. Nurses at camp will administer the medication.  It is the responsibility of the child to go to the nurse's station to take their medication at the appropriate time.

  23. Frequently Asked Questions • How are cabins and tribes chosen? A computer program randomly places students in cabin groups.  Five or six of those cabin groups are then put together to make a tribe.  With about 30 students per tribe, it is very likely that friends will be in the group.  Students are encouraged to also make new friends while at camp.  Teamwork and cooperation are two of the big themes at camp.  Obviously, all cabins will have students of the same gender. • What if it rains? Almost every activity will continue in the event of rain.  Most of the activities have shelter.  If a thunderstorm approaches, some outdoor activities may be cancelled or relocated.  Rain gear at camp is a must.  It rains almost every year, so be prepared. • Boating: canoes or boats? All students must ride in a rowboat and wear a life jacket. Students that wish to ride in a canoe must do so with a chaperone. CPR trained lifeguards will be patrolling the lake and helping the students.  The lake is only a few feet deep. • Do the students have to go swimming? No, there is plenty of sand on the beach to play with if your child does not like to swim. • Can the students bring snacks? Yes, snacks are allowed at camp as long as they are in a sealed plastic bag.  Candy is also allowed, but NO GUM.  All campers are expected to throw away their trash and wrappers in the proper container.

  25. Frequently Asked Questions • Can the students bring electronic games? No, for two reasons.  First, there are no electrical outlets in the cabins. Secondly, we wouldn't want anything expensive to get lost or misplaced.  This goes for hand-held electronic games as well.  Students may not bring cell phones.  Students are encouraged to bring small travel games or card games • Can the students bring cell phones? Students may not bring cell phones.  Chaperones are permitted to bring them.   • What if the children misbehave? All school rules apply at camp.  If a student breaks a rule or misbehaves he/she will face consequences.  The student may have to sit out of the activities or even be sent home.  If a child is sent home, the parent must come out to camp to pick up their child.   Let's not have that happen! Please speak with your child about proper manners and behavior before leaving for camp. • When and how do we leave for camp? All students and chaperones must ride the bus to and from camp.  We will leave from Rush School on the morning of June 6th. More information on departure and arrival procedures will be sent home in late May.
