Emerging Intelligent Transportation Stockholm • CHALLENGE • Stockholm, like cities throughout the world, is struggling with traffic congestion and pollution that is adversely effecting the quality of life. • SOLUTION • Implement a pilot congestion charging system that monitors traffic flow throughout the cities charging zones. Vehicles entering or leaving the charging zone are charged based on time of day, with fares highest during peak rush hours. The solutions leverages RFID technologies and cameras linked to license plate data bases to identify vehicles. • BENEFITS • In the first month of the pilot traffic in the charging zones, • traffic was reduced by 100,000 vehicle passages per day or 25% • train and transit passengers increased by 40,000 per day • parking fines reduced by 29% • Stockholm residents voted to continue to pay for the privilege of driving in the City E-Government Sofia, March 13th 2008
