  2. What are Barbiturates made of. • Barbiturates are composed of barburic acid, which is a cyclic alkane called 6-hydroxyuracil

  3. General Information • Used for sedation • In the 1970’s used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and seizures • High last from 2 minutes – 2 days • It can be injected and used in pill form. • Multiple colors • Generic names: amoburital, pentoburital, phenoburital, secaburital, tuinal

  4. What it does • Used as a brain relaxer • Similar effects to intoxication/ drunkenness • Causes doziness (small dose) • Slurred speech/ confusion (large dose) • Death (grandiose dose)

  5. Affected Organs • The Brain: slows electrical impulse (slows muscles) • The Eyes: impairs optic nerve • Repertory System: severe repertory depression

  6. Side Effects • Unusual excitement • Bleeding sores • Rashes • Euphoria
