  2. London, England • Capital city of England • England is also known as • Great Britain (today United Kingdom) Parliament Building

  3. Virginia Company of London • Some men in London wanted to send settlers to Virginia, but none of them was rich enough to start a colony by himself. • So all of them put their money together and owned a little part of the company. • This little part of a company is called a “share” or “stock.” Virginia Company’s “official” seal from the King (after they got their charter)

  4. Economic Venture $$$$$$$$$ • The Virginia Company of London wanted to send men to Virginia to find gold and make money for their company. • If they could make money from their colony in Virginia, their company would become wealthy!!

  5. King James I • Ruling monarch of England after Queen Elisabeth died • He claimed that Virginia belonged to him, because he was England’s king.

  6. Why did England want to colonize in America? • England wanted to establish an American colony to increase its wealth and power. Why would King James say “Yes”!?

  7. Silver and Gold • 1. England hoped to find silver and gold in America.

  8. 2. A colony in America could furnish raw materials that could not be grown or obtained in England. Tobacco Lumber

  9. New Markets for Trade • 3. England wanted to open new markets for trade. • Raw materials from the Virginia  to other countries that don’t have much  England gets all the $ or stuff from other countries in return!

  10. Charter • King James grants the Virginia Company a charter. • This charter gave permission to start a colony along the Chesapeake Bay area.

  12. Formative Assessment: • Each student will design an advertisement poster, entreating volunteers to sign up for the voyage to Virginia for the purpose of finding riches and establishing a permanent settlement. Posters must be colorful, include at least 4 facts, and be persuasive.

  13. Primary Source Activity • The following advertisements were found in British newspapers in the early years of the Jamestown settlement (1607-1612). Work with a partner to list at least 3 ideas in each part of the graphic organizer.

  19. What’s an economic venture? • The stockholders hoped to make a lot of money for themselves and England—that’s the economic part. • A venture is a business that is risky or dangerous. The stockholders found 104 men willing to go on this trip.

Captain Christopher Newport • Ship captain of the “fleet” that took the English settlers to Jamestown in 1607. • Famous for sailing with Sir Francis Drake in many sea battles against the Spanish. • Lost his right arm in battle (the “real” Captain Hook) http://www.captainchristophernewport.com/

Captain Christopher Newport • Known as the Admiral of Virginia • Came back on numerous voyages to Jamestown to re-supply the starving colonists • Later, When the Sea Venturewas shipwrecked on Bermuda during a hurricane, Newport organized 150 colonists to build two new vessels for their deliverance to Jamestown. A Virginia college is named after him today!

  22. Land Ho! The settlers first landed at Cape Henry, which is today’s Virginia Beach.

  23. Why did they not stay at Cape Henry? • Unfriendly Indians • Rough water (ocean waves crashing) difficult for ships to dock • Instructions (from the charter) told the settlers to go inlandand find a suitable place for their colony.

  25. Where WAS Jamestown located? • In 1607, when settlers arrived, Jamestown was located on a narrow peninsula bordered on 3 sides by the James River.

  31. Palisade • Why would the settlers have made a palisade? • What natural resources would they have used to make the palisade walls?

  32. Wattle and Daub Houses • woven lattice of wooden strips called wattle is daubedwith a sticky material usually made of some combination of wet soil, clay , sand, animal dung and straw.

  33. Why is it important that we study Jamestown? • Became the first permanent English settlement in North America in 1607.
