  1. Studies of N=Z Nuclei from Ni to Sn 40Ca(40Ca,2a)72Kr: microball + GS • Physics Goal • Understanding influence of shell effects (68Se, S.Fischer et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 (2000) 4064) • Understanding of pair correlations, specifically T=0,1, n-p pairing . Experimentally challenging due to small production cross-sections! • Alignments of g9/2 neutrons and protons are delayed in 72Kr relative to 74,76Kr. • Several theoretical investigations suggest delayed alignments in N=Z nuclei are a consequence of T=0, n-p pairing. • See similar delays in 76Sr and 80Zr. (S. Fischer et al., submitted Phys. Rev. Lett.) Delayed Alignment!

  2. Measuring Excited States in the Proton-Emitter 141Ho (D. Seweryniak, Phys. Rev. Lett., to be published) Physics Goals: Are the measured rotational properties of 141Ho consistent with the conclusions from the decay work? • Production cross-sections are very small. Use GS + FMA to correlate g-rays with proton decay of 141Ho. • Deformed band measured on top of ground state. • Extracted deformation is consistent with value obtained from proton-decay work. • Rotational properties suggest nucleus is triaxial.

  3. Determining Spin of Particle Unbound States in 24Mg • Physics Goal • Using a-a-g and a-a-g-g angular correlations, establish the spin of particle unbound states in 24Mg: • Experiment performed with GS and a small array of double-sided Si strip detectors (DSSD). • Assigned unambiguously for the first time, spin 10 states in 24Mg. Also assigned a number of new spin 8 and 9 states. • Ground state band in 24Mg now established up to 10+ and hw = 2.9 MeV.

  5. Radiative Capture in Heavy Nuclei • Physics Goals: • Attempt to understand the radiative capture process observed in symmetric reactions using Zr beams and targets. • Complement radiative capture GS experiment on 24Mg • Observables measured: Gamma-ray total energy and multiplicity. • Both excitation energy and spin are higher in the capture channel relative to 1n evaporation. • Complimentary to GDR experiment with LEPPEX.
