History • Was created in Germany in 1952, began use in 1954 • Preludin was designed as an anorectic • Created as safer alternative to amphetamines and methamphetamines • Was designed to cause less nervousness, hyperexcitability, euphoria, insomnia, and tachycardia than most amphetamines • Thousands and thousands of addicts in Sweden • Taken off the market in 1965 • Still abused today, made illegally as Bam or Sweeties • Rarely prescribed today

  4. How it Works • Blocks reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine in presynaptic neuron • Causes greater release of these in extraneuronal space • Dopamine’s effect on tumero-infundibular system leads to reduced appetite
