On The Same Page Summit • The On The Same Page Summit was convened in October 2008 in order to: • Advance the Board of Regents Policy Statement on Improving Student Achievement and School Performance through Parent and Family Partnerships • Provide support and assistance with NYSED Implementation Plan • Honorary Chair: Chancellor Emeritus Robert Bennett

  3. 30 year history of parental involvement services to the community and schools www.epicforchildren.org Large network of urban focused service delivery 112 year history of parental involvement advocacy and services to communities and schools www.nyspta.org Large network of suburban and rural constituents Collaboration and Partnership Partnering with the NYS PIRC since 2007, convened a statewide summit to systemically advance Family Engagement in New York State

PIRC Goals • Strengthen partnerships between parents and schools to improve student achievement • Help parents understand their rights under the No Child Left Behind Act • Demonstrate ways parents can support learning at home and help children succeed in school PIRC Priorities and New Directions • Collaborate with State and local educational agencies to foster the implementation of the parental involvement requirements of Title I • Provide assistance to schools and districts to address the parental involvement requirements of Title I • Provide accurate, timely, and understandable information regarding key NCLB provisions • Provide Statewide services • Two working collaboratively in NYS – one sponsored by EPIC and one by Cornell Cooperative Extension

  5. Summit Goal • To begin a dialogue in order to create systemic change in effectively engaging families and communities in closing the achievement gap

Summit Objectives • Overview of current research on the impact of family engagement • Examine family engagement as a key instructional strategy for closing the achievement gap • Assess the current environment and share opportunities for strategic advancement of optimal family engagement • Participate on various partnership Action Teams and pursue positive outcomes in implementing the Regents Family Engagement policy

Action Teams • Professional Staff Development Opportunities • Parent Involvement/Family Engagement Quality Indicators • Family Engagement Assessment Tools • Cultural Competence • Engaging the Business Community to Enhance Family Engagement • Higher Education and Professional Certification Programs • Engaging Social Welfare/Healthcare Community to Enhance Family Engagement • Promoting Partnership with Families of Children with Disabilities

SummitProgress To Date • Formalized and convened eight (8) Action Teams aligned to the NYSED Implementation Plan • Convened a cross agency team to guide and support their work • Created guidelines and action priorities that focus the work of each team • Developed a website to support the work of the Action Teams. • Set next summit date for September 23-24 in Albany NY.

  9. Next Steps • Ensure Action Teams have appropriate membership • Convene the Summit in September 2009 • Create more specific Action Team outcome/recommendation guidelines that are thesis focused - based on data, research and best practices • Advocate for the creation of a Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Family Engagement
