BACKGROUND • September 26, 2009 (Saturday), Tropical Storm “Ketsana” hit the Philippines with sustained winds of 55kph and gustiness of up to 11kph. • Regions Affected: Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley Region, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, CAR and Metro Manila. • Results: Widespread flooding and landslides • Lifelines affected (roads/bridges, • communication, power) • Destroying hundreds of houses • Destroying health infrastructures • Forcing tens of thousands • in evacuation centers • Hundreds of lives loss

  2. TROPICAL STORM KETSANA • 2.5 million families affected in Manila and nearby provinces • 373,675 families taking refuge in 561 evacuation centers • 246 deaths; a number still missing • Super typhoon Parma has entered Philippine area of responsibility

  6. POTENTIAL PROJECTS • IMMEDIATE: • Humanitarian (volunteer medical teams) • Relief operations (food, medicines, blankets, clothes, tents, diapers, hygiene kits, trash bags) • Sanitation (potable water, portable toilets) • Health Education • Psychosocial (Trauma counseling)

NEEDED MEDICINES/ITEMS • Oral, topical and intravenous antibiotics for children and adults • AntipyreticsORT (solution) & Zinc • Anti-hypertensive drugs • Intravenous fluids like NSS, DSW, D10W • Anti-tetanus, tetanus toxoid and anti-measles vaccines • MultivitaminsFerrous sulfate for mothers • Potable water • Chlorine Tablets • Soaps and alcohol • Hygiene kits which include toothpaste, toothbrush, sanitary napkins, underwear • Portable toilets • Trashbags • Cleaning equipment and supplies

POSSIBLE FUTURE ACTION • Repair/ rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure (houses, schools, hospitals) • Continuous provision of medical services • Surveillance Team • Sanitation team • Psychosocial Team (esp. for children and those who lost loved ones) • 4. Public Information Intensification (health and sanitation and disaster preparedness) • 5. Continuation of schooling while repair is ongoing
