  1. Applied Research Initiative Seneca College is embarking on an initiative that will allow us to offer more applied degree programs and engage in applied research opportunities with industry.

  2. Seneca College Objectives • Applied research resource for external entities • Increase advanced applied research activities • Foster partnerships • Provide advanced research opportunities for faculty • Encourage external participation and involvement in Seneca College activities

  3. “SMART Clothing” Integrating Technology into Clothing making it “Smart” such that the quality of life is significantly enhanced.

  4. Medical • an environmental sensor tests the surrounding air for allergens to warn individuals with asthma problems. • a built in timer signals when to take necessary medication such as insulin, drugs. • sensors in the garment monitor a patients heart rate, perspiration level indication overexertion. • transmitter indicates when an Alzheimer's patient wanders too far from a safe area.

  5. Safety • person under attack/duress presses a panic button in garment to send audio and video signal to remote monitoring location • 'sniffer' sensors determine air quality in hazardous environments such as mines • ‘sniffer’ sensors detect biological hazards such as anthrax

  6. Safety continued • sensing body temperature (in extreme temperature environment) turns on a heater/cooler in garment which allows air to regulation of air temperature • monitor dehydration/hydration • should persons become trapped, a transmitted signal would summon rescue personnel • deploy emergency oxygen supply upon demand

  7. Personal • garments have a global positioning systems (GPS) informing occupant of whereabouts al all times. • garments of 10 or more can be wirelessly networked, with audio, video and digital capability, keeping everyone in touch • light emitting diodes (LEDs), light emitting plasma are incorporated in a manner which complements • change colour/camouflage based on environmental conditions such as snow or jungle • style and fashion.

  8. Power Source • powered by a series of rechargeable batteries • incorporated into the garment in an unobtrusive location • flexible solar panel on shoulders to facilitate charging batteries • possess 110 v. recharging capability
