What is a Theme? • A theme is a universal idea that encompasses the meaning or message of a piece of literature. • Universal ideas are ideas that all humans can relate to.
What universal idea was featured inThe Kite Runner? Universal Idea: Betrayal Universal Idea: Forgiveness • U • Universal Idea: Betrayal • Ask yourself, What did the author want to say about betrayal? • Theme Statement: Betrayal can ruin lives • Universal Idea: Forgiveness • What point was the author trying to make about forgiveness? • Theme Statement:Forgiveness is liberating (freeing)

But here it is different. Wrinkles aren't desirable. A round belly isn't a sign of success” (Collins 74). Let’s analyze the following quotes from The Hunger Games

Example of a theme statement • Big idea from a novel: Superficiality • Theme statement: Society has placed too much importance on looks when many only want to live another day. • A theme statement is a statement of truth. It identifies what the author is trying to say about a topic such as superficiality.
