  3. What do they represent? • Shylock - Stereotypical Jew • Portia - Stereotype of 1500’s women • Antonio - Stereotype of Merchant/Businessman • Bassanio – Portia's lover

  4. Shylock • Jewish money lender in Venice • Seeks revenge against Christian • Protagonist • Creation of the circumstance • Wants revenge, because he faced cruelty at hands of Christians – hard for us to make him out as a complete monster • Stereotype of Jews at the time

  5. Portia • Wealthy heiress from Belmont • Beauty matched with intelligence • Embodies virtues of typical Shakespearean women • Emerges as the antidote to Shylocks malice • Only given a voice when dressed as a male • Stereotypical of women at the time (relationships + romance)

  6. Antonio • Lackluster character • Melancholy (Hopeless depressive) • Seems to have feelings for Bassanio, that get exploited • Stereotypical of merchants • Anti-Semite
