  1. GIMP Introduction

  2. Creating a new document • After opening GIMP, create a new document by clicking FileNew • In the dialogue box that opens, select “US-Letter” template • Press “OK”

  3. Using Layers • In the window that your blank document is on select DialogueLayers (the layers window should appear, if it wasn’t already there) • In your new document window, select LayerNew Layer • Name the new layer “Layer 1” and make sure transparency is selected as the layer fill type before pressing press “OK”)

  4. Using Layers • In your new document window, select LayerNew Layer again (the layer fill type should still be transparency, but this time name the layer “Layer 2”)

  5. Using Layers • Both of the new layers should appear within the Layer Window

  6. Using Layers • Select “Layer 1” by clicking on it within the layer window (you will know you selected it because it will turn blue) • Select the paintbrush tool • Click the foreground color and change it to brown

  7. Use the paint brush to draw a tree trunk on your blank document • After you have drawn your tree trunk, select the paint can • Under “Fill Type” select pine (it is probably already selected for you) • Click within the center of your tree trunk to fill it in with the pine pattern

  8. Select the paint brush again • Change your foreground color to green • Draw a top to your tree • Select the paint can • Change the fill type to “FG color fill” (foreground color fill) • Click within the top of your tree to fill it in green

  9. Hiding the Layer • Click on the eyeball next to Layer 1 in order to temporarily hide the layer

  10. Working on another layer • Select Layer 2 by clicking on it (it will turn blue when it is selected) • Use the paint brush and paint can to draw the background scene below (just do your best)

  11. Change the opacity of Layer 2 to 50% so you can see what the two layers look like when they are together (you will also need to click where the eyeball was to make the layer visible)

  12. Since you want to make your tree snazzy, but you don’t want to change your background, re-select Layer 1 (it will turn blue once it has been selected) • Select FiltersCubism • Change Tile size to 30.5 and Tile saturation to 1.5 • Click “OK”

  13. Putting the layers in the right order • Select the top layer (Layer 2) • Change Layer 2’s opacity back to 100%

  14. Putting the layers in the right order • Select Layer 1 • Click the Raise this layer button

  15. Merge the Layers • Now that the layers are stacked in the right order, you need to merge all of the layers into one • Click ImageMerge Visible Layers • Make sure “Expanded as Necessary” is selected and then click “Merge”

  16. This is what your image should look like

  17. Saving your Image • Select FileSave As • Change the file name to “Gimp Practice” • Select the place where you would like to save the file (your H: drive)

  18. Saving your Image • Click the words that say “Select File Type (By Extension)” • If you were saving this as a document that you were going to work on you would save it as a Gimp XCF Image • Since you are saving it as a finished picture, you will save it as a JPEG image • Select JPEG image • Click “Save”

  19. Saving your Image • You will be told that you need to flatten your file • Click “Export”

  20. Saving your Image • A box will pop up asking you what quality you want to save the image at. The higher the number the higher the quality. • Leave the number at 85 and click “Save”
