Talent Development Vision: For students from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds who are gifted or have high academic potential to have a rigorous and relevant educational experience. • Jay M. Robinson provides a rigorous academic program that pushes students to grow and achieve. • We utilize the NC Standard Course of Study and the Common Core Standards in addition to supplemental enrichment resources, and the TD curriculum.

What is different about Middle School? • TD status does NOT directly impact level of class for students. • Class placement is determined by testing information, teacher recommendation, and academic performance. • Students are served within the regular setting through rigorous instruction and highly qualified teachers.

  6. Differentiated Education Plan (DEP Form) • Completed annually for each child identified as TD • Indicates Classroom Strategies • Located in the child’s cumulative folder in the main office DEP

  7. Performance Form • A form will be sent home with each child at the close of the school year with the student’s report card. • The performance form makes the parent aware of their child’s performance using the TD standards.

  8. The language arts curriculum is taught in a heterogeneously mixed group of students. We have highly qualified teachers who use differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students. CMS has adopted a new textbook (Holt-McDougal) this year which incorporates the new Common Core standards as well as the NCSCS. The following strategies are used to enrich curriculum: SpringBoard- 7th & 8th grade Thematic study using novels Opportunities to engage in Socratic dialogue, solve problems, and conduct research Spiraling curriculum builds on themes, concepts, and strategies adding depth, rigor, and complexity as the year progresses Language Arts

SEM-R: School-wide enrichment model of reading A model for developing talented readers who enjoy the complexities of literature and understand how to interpret texts. -Tuesdays & Thursdays during our RECHARGE period. Our goal: To strengthen students’ fluency and comprehension while encouraging sustained independent reading at the appropriate level.

  10. Mathematics CMS has adopted a new math textbook, Connected Mathematics 2. This text is an inquiry-based model of instruction and allows for a variety of instruction within the classroom setting. Students have opportunities to investigate objectives independently, cooperatively and through teacher guidance. Application skills are evident throughout the text and allows students to dig deep into the objectives presented. The text lends itself to differentiated instruction throughout every unit.

Mathematics • Students who successfully complete Honors Math 7 will take Algebra I next year in 8th grade. “Successful” is defined as an A or B in the class AND a 4/99th Percentile on the EOG. • Students who struggle in Honors Math 7 will take Standard Plus Math 8. “Struggling” is defined as a C,D or F in the class and/or a 3 or below on the EOG. These students will have the opportunity to take Algebra I in 9th grade.

  12. Science and Social Studies The Science & Social Studies curriculums are taught in a heterogeneously mixed group of students. We have highly qualified teachers who use differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students. Students will work collaboratively to investigate answers to real-world problems in a lab setting. Teachers integrate curriculum to strengthen core skills through the content area.

Robinson Differentiation is the planned practice of building a structure that allows each student to reach maximum personal growth and academic growth. • Pre-assess in order to fulfill the vision • Provide an environment where every student acquires new learning everyday. • Use data to drive instructional decisions throughout the process • Plan lessons based on results using a variety of strategies • Incorporate meaningful anchor activities that are rigorous, relevant, and stimulate critical thinking
