Understand Internet Terminology • In today’s world, the Internet is used for a variety of tasks, including locating information about any topic one could imagine, communicating with others through email or social networking sites, and buying and selling goods and services. • A web browser is a software program that allows you to view the text, images, and other content stored on a web page on the Internet. • Uniform Resource Locators, referred to as URLs, identify web servers that have content on the Internet. • A URL is often referred to as a web address. • Just as you need a specific mailing address to identify your location to the post office, a web server has a unique web address that identifies its location to the Internet.

Understand Internet Terminology…continued • URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) are used to identify locations on the Internet. • The format of a URL is http://server-name.domain. • The http stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol, the language used to transfer data within the World Wide Web. • The colon and slashes separate the protocol from the server name. • The server name in http://www.microsoft.com is microsoft. • The last part of the URL is the domain to which the server belongs. For example, .com refers to “commercial,” indicating that the URL is for a commercial company. Other domains include .edu for “educational,” .gov for “government,” and .mil for “military.”

Evaluate Content on the Web • The Web is a vast repository of information that is easily accessible and constantly changing. • Although a wealth of accurate and timely information is available at your fingertips, information also exists that may be outdated, inaccurate, or of poor quality that should not be relied upon. • Since anyone with an Internet connection and the right software can publish information on the Web, knowing the clues to recognizing accurate and current content is a worthwhile skill.
