Vs 19- As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Vs 21- To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Vs 3 - Poor in Spirit • Attribute • “Poor” – like a pauper or a beggar • Understand that we are Spiritually Destitute • Rev 3:17 • Blessing – Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven • Destitute will have an Inheritance – 1 Pet 1:3-4 • Heirs are not sojourners in their own country • Antithesis • 1 Jn 1:8-10

Vs 4 – They Who Mourn • Attribute • Grieve for the sinful & destitute state of our spirit • Ps 6:1-7; Act 2:36-37; 2 Cor 7:10-11 • Blessing – Shall Be Comforted • Comforted = to call near, i.e. invite, invoke (by imploration, exhortation or consolation) • Eph 2:13 • Sorrow because we are separated from God…sorrow is relieved when He brings us close to Him • Antithesis • Eph 4:19

Vs 5 – The Meek • Attribute • Meek = humble, strength under control • Col 3:12 – attitude towards each other • James 1:21 – our attitude towards God • Blessing – Inherit the Earth • We can use our strength to make ourselves great… or we can subject our strength to God and he will make us great. • Mt 20:20-27 • Antithesis • James 4:6

  13. Vs 6 – They Who Hunger & Thirst After Righteousness • Attribute • Starving to be righteous - Ps 17:15; Heb 11:6 • Blessing – Shall Be Filled…with Righteousness • Only through Christ - 1 Pet 2:21-24 • Through His Word - Rom 10:9-10, 17 • Antithesis • 1 Pet 4:18; Rom 10:1-3

Vs 7 – The Merciful • Attribute • Merciful = Compassionate • “The word mercy, among the Jews, signified two things: the pardon of injuries, and almsgiving.” - Adam Clark’s Commentary • Blessing – Obtain Mercy • 1 Pet 2:9-10 – Can be God’s people because we obtained mercy • Antithesis • Mt 18:32-35

  15. Vs 8 – The Pure in Heart • Attribute • Pure = Clean • Jn 15:3 • Blessing – Shall See God • God’s Children will see Him in Heaven - 1 Jn 3:2-3 • Antithesis • Hypocrisy - Mt 23:13-33

  16. Vs 9 – The Peacemakers • Attribute • Bring people to Christ - Rom 10:15; Col 1:20-21 • Bring physical peace - Rom 12:17-21 • Blessing – Called the Children of God • Rom 15:33 • God is a God of Peace, His children must also be “of Peace” • Antithesis • Heb 12:14 – “without which no man shall see the Lord”

  17. Vs 10 – The Persecuted For Righteousness Sake • Attribute • Suffer for Christ • 2 Tim 3:12 • Blessing – Reward In Heaven • Those treated like criminals for Righteousness will gain a reward in Heaven • Antithesis • 2 Tim 2:12 – If we deny Him, He will deny us

  18. Conclusion • These “Attributes”: • Understanding our Spiritual Need • Sorrowing over our sin • Humility • Longing to be righteous • Show Mercy • Clean Heart showing clean actions • Make peace with other and God • Endure persecution for Christ Are NOT Optional
