Which people are eligible to obtain Portuguese citizenship? • Children and grandchildren of a person who was born in the land of Goa before 1961 is eligible to apply for a Portugal Passport is what the Goan law says. • It does not matter which country you were born in as long as your parents birth place was Goa during the ruling period of the Portuguese, you are eligible to obtain a Portuguese Nationality for Goans. • You can apply for Portuguese citizenship on the basis of your marriage if in case you are married to a Portuguese national. • Even after the death of a person, his or her descendants can apply for Portuguese nationality of the deceased on the basis of the place of birth of the deceased. • Also, the descendants of the deceased person are allowed to submit the application for a Portuguese passport.

What are the requirements that a person needs to fulfill before applying for Portuguese nationality? • This can basically be sub divided into three categories: • Date of birth before 18/12/1961 in Goa: • Certificates validating the date and place of birth and if applicable the marriage date of the applicant. These documents have to be legally issued. • In case the applicant is submitting the form in Goa: • An Indian passport that is not expired or cancelled. • A recent photograph of the applicant and identification documents both of which need to be attested. • Valid driving license, voter identification card, ration card.

An address proof stating the complete address of the applicant with a photograph attached to it. • The address proof needs to show the applicants residence in that place between January 1974 and December 1975. • Date of birth after 1961: • The proof of birth being before 1961 as well as a marriage certificate of both the parents stating that the marriage took place in Goa is compulsory to be submitted by an applicant falling in this category. • The rest of the requirements are the same as the ones mentioned in the first category. • Applicants whose date of birth is after 1961 or whose parents were born in Goa before 1961 or who got married in Goa before 1961:
