  4. Soda around the world

  8. What makes a good introductionparagraph? • Grab attention, • Describe the topic • Present the major ideas • Put your topic sentence at the end.

  9. Grab attention E.g. Enjoying a sweet drink is great, until you need to get you blood sugar checked every day.

  10. Describe the topic, tell a little more. Add a little bit to the topic sentence. Let the audience know what you are writing about: Eg: The question of personal freedom becomes a problem when it harms others.

  11. Present the major ideas Why are we writing this or why have we chosen this argument: Eg: We are all affected by the level of health in our cities.

  12. Put your topic sentence at the end Save the best for last, this is where you let you audience know what you are claiming: Eg: The money taken in a sugar tax is necessary to support the health system and as a deterrent to careless consumers.

  13. All together now! A nice cold, sweet, fizzy drink is something I love at the end of a meal. It tastes great and settles the stomach, but is it the right thing to do? As sugar related sicknesses are now becoming more common around the world, some people claim that a sugar tax might reduce consumption and help pay for the price of health care. While I agree with the concept of personal freedom, I also agree with the concept of individual responsibility. Therefore, I strongly believe that a sugar tax is necessary to offset the cost of health care and to work as a discouragement to the majority of the population.

  14. independent practice! Working alone, use the ‘graphic organizer’ worksheet to help you plan your introductory paragraph!
