  1. A Guide to Starting an Art Collection If you are planning to dress up the walls of your house with artwork, there is no better time to do so than now. The Internet is awash with sites offering wall art work, posters, and reproductions that will be delivered to your doorstep. So, how do you start an art collection?

  2. Size matters • Acquiring small pieces initially is a great way to start your collection. For example, check out the exquisite pieces of art at On Paper Lab, created by their in-house design team. These are then transformed into high-quality prints and posters. Being affordable, it is an ideal way to get off the mark

  3. Placing the art • An exquisite piece of art should be treated with respect. Do not just bang a nail wherever you want to and hang it. The placement of the furniture, the size of the windows, the height and width of a wall are all factors that determine where your art should be placed. Finally, do not forget the lighting. Put a focus bulb to highlight the artwork but not in the path of direct sunlight. The UV rays can have a very destructive effect on the piece.

  4. Caring for the artwork • High humidity levels affect a painting and hence, ensure that the room where you put the artwork has low moisture content and is not in direct contact with water. If the artwork has to be cleaned, use a feather duster and lightly dust it. • Simply buying works of art is not enough. What is also important is how and where you set it up. It goes a long way to enhancing the appeal of the artwork that you have investing in.
