  2. Your home is supposed to be a place where you and your family can feel safe and comfortable. Unfortunately, thieves are always on lookout for homes that are easy to break into. There are many things you can do to secure your home, but figuring out where to start can be difficult.

  3. 1. Change Your Locks • One of the initial things you should do upon moving into a new house is to change all the locks. Chances are, you won’t know much about the people who lived there before you and they may have duplicate keys. Remember to also replace your locks if you lose your keys, in case someone who knows where you live finds them.

  4. 2. Install Deadbolts • Deadbolts are a simple way to secure your exterior doors. Although they’re more expensive than conventional locks, 1 inch-thick deadbolts provide stronger protection. Also, make sure there’s minimal space left between the door and frame so intruders won’t be able to pry door open. You can reinforce your doors with plywood or sheet metal.

  5. 3. Protect Your Windows • Windows are a popular way for thieves to gain entry. Burglar-resistant glass is one option, if it fits your budget. You can also install window pin locks. Factory latches offer poor security and pin locks are cheap, easy to install and difficult to get past.

  6. 4. Install An Alarm System • If burglars think you have an alarm system, they’re likely to move on to another home. A good system doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars, either. For a couple hundred dollars, you can find professional grade alarm systems online. Post signs near both doors of your home and stickers on all the windows, so potential thieves will think twice.

  7. 5. Hire A Security Guard • One of the best ways to keep thieves away is to hire a guard from a security agency. The mere presence of a guard is often enough to deter intruders, but if there is any trouble, they can deal with it immediately. They can also be trained to spot potential threats ahead of time, making it possible to prevent break-ins from occurring. Make sure any company you hire provides documentation and background check information for any potential guard candidates.

  8. 6. Shred Your Documents • Identity theft is more popular than ever and you may not know you’re a victim until your credit is ruined. Don’t throw any important papers in the trash until you’ve shredded them thoroughly. This includes bills, bank statements, and credit card offers. Upon finding these documents in your garbage, thieves can determine whether or not you’re worth burglarizing and know far more about you than they should.

  9. As a homeowner, it’s up to you to make sure your home is safe for each member of your family. The tips above are most effective when combined as part of a comprehensive approach to home security. Remember that no matter how prepared you might be, caution is the most important factor.
