This PPT explores the different levels of Autism Spectrum Disorder as defined by DSM-5, ranging from Level 1 (requiring support) to Level 3 (requiring very substantial support). It highlights the severity of social, verbal, and behavioral challenges at each level. The presentation also discusses current treatment options, focusing on rehabilitative therapies and the potential role of stem cell therapy in improving quality of life and promoting functional independence, with future hope lying in regenerative medicine.

Understanding The Levels of Autism www.advancells.com
Autism It occurs due to inadequate brain development. It primarily causes a lack of communication and social skills. It is included in autism spectrum disorder. Different levels of autism DSM-5 has categorized it into three severity levels based on the social skills repetitive behaviour
Level 1 Autism Spectrum Disorder The deficits in social skills are apparent when the caregiver is absent. At this level, autistic individuals can form full sentences but fail in to-and-from- interaction. Their repetitive behavior is less and does not interfere with their daily activities. They have difficulty initiating conversations. They find adapting to changes difficult. At level 1, autistic individuals show considerable functional dependence, therefore requiring some support from caregivers.
Level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder The lack of communication skills is obvious even in the presence of a caregiver. Repetitive behaviors are frequent, affecting their daily activities. They exhibit limited initiation of conversations. They show deficits in both verbal and non-verbal communication. They have inflexible behavior, not able to adapt to changes. Level 2 autistic individuals might make simple sentences but have limited interaction Thus, they require substantial support from their caregivers.
Level 3 Autism Spectrum Disorder They have a severe lack of verbal and non-verbal communication skills. They exhibit very limited initiation of conversations. Repetitive behaviors are more frequent, affecting all aspects of life. They have extreme difficulty adapting to changes. Level 3 individuals can speak a few intelligible words. Therefore, they require very substantial support from their caregivers.
Treatment Options Rehabilitative therapies can improve the quality of patient’s lives by developing functional independence. The standard treatment does not address the underlying abnormal neurodevelopment. With their regenerative power, stem cells have shown improvements in autistic individuals.
Future Perspectives The lack of a definitive cure has urged the search for a treatment in regenerative medicine. Stem cells, central to regenerative medicine, have shown positive outcomes in early clinical studies. In the future, standardization of stem cell therapy will lead to its clinical translation.
