  3. Lesson 5 Aim: To understand the verse: اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ “Guide us on the straight path”

  4. Objectives Students should be able to: • Translate and explain the verse اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيم • Understand what we should supplicate for and why • Know the three words that are used as “path” • Understand why Allah has used الصِّرَاطَ • Understand that abiding by the Sunnah is the way to stay on the straight path

  5. What does this Verse mean? اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيم – Guide us on the straight path • Allah is teaching us on how to make duaa and what to ask for • We understand that human being finds it hard to remain on the straight path therefore we should seek help from Allah • Guidance comes solely from Allah but Allah grants us a means to help us to stay on this path. Example, Teacher, Shaykh

  6. Why is الصِّرَاطَ being used? الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيم – Straight path There are three arabic words used in the Quraan as path/road – • سبيل • طريق • صراط So why did Allah use صراط and not the others?

  7. Why الصِّرَاطَ is being used? • صراط is that road or path which has many side roads which lead a person off the straight path. • There are many attractive side roads which are tempting us to leave the الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيم straight path • But on the other side of them is punishment and the wrath of Allah

  8. Sunnah– Straight Path وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ رُوحًا مِّنْ أَمْرِنَا مَا كُنتَ تَدْرِي مَا الْكِتَابُ وَلَا الْإِيمَانُ وَلَٰكِن جَعَلْنَاهُ نُورًا نَّهْدِي بِهِ مَن نَّشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِي إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ “And thus did We reveal to you an inspired book by Our command. You did not know what the Book was, nor (what) the faith (was), but We made it a light, guiding thereby whom We please of Our servants; and most surely you show the way to the right path” [Surah Ash Shura, Ayat 52]

  9. Sunnah – Straight Path • By following the Sunnah we can ensure that we are on the straight path • And by drifting from the Sunnah we know that we are exiting the straight path • Sunnah leads us to Allah and if we want to stay on the straight path we must try and resemble Him inwardly and outwardly in actions and conduct. • It is only then the road will lead us to the pleasure and closeness of Allah

  10. Summary • Translation and explanation اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيم • What to supplicate for and why • Three words of path • Why Allah used الصِّرَاطَ • Sunnah – a way to stay on the straight path
