OnApril29,Dfinity–anon-profitgroupthatdevelopstheinternet computingprotocol–suedMetaPlatformsinCalifornia,sayingthefirm wasusingalogothatwasfartooclosetoitsowntoenticeclientsto its newcentralizedsystem. "Metaverse" AccordingtoDfinity,thecompany'strademarkisan"infinitysign,"which wasfiledwiththeUnitedStatesPatentandTrademarkOffice("USPTO") onOctJoobbeders9c,rip2t0io1n8.

  3. Twocompaniesarecompeting forbrandawareness Dfinity'sactionisbasedontheinternationalcategories underwhichthefirmwasregistered,whicharein disagreementwithMeta's. Dfinityhasregisteredatrademarktodeliver blockchaintechnologyservicesanddecentralized platforms. Meta Dfinityfurtherstatedthatbecausethecolorpalette"is notspecifiedasacharacteristicofthemark,Dfinity's ownershipextendstocolorvariants."

Asaresult,DfinityissuingMeta,claimingthattheyhavealreadyobtained trademarkregistrationtoprovidethesameservicesthatMetawishesto provide,suchas"designanddevelopmentofcomputerhardwareand softwareandsoftware";"hostingofThirdPartySoftwareApplications";and "hostingofDigitalContentontheInternet." Dfinityclaimsthatthismaygeneratemisunderstandingamongpotential consumersofitsservices.

  6. “ThesimilaritiesbetweentheMetabrandandtheDfinitybrand,andMeta’s intendeduseofitsbrandinthesamespaceandthroughthesamecustomer baseasDfinity,willconfuseconsumerswillmistakenlybelievethatMetaandits servicesarelinkedto,sponsoredby,affiliatedwithorrelatedtoDfinity,orthat Dfinityanditsservicesarelinked,sponsored,affiliatedorrelatedtoMeta.” "Meta'spastmightjeopardizeDfinity'sfuture" DfinityallegesinitscomplaintthatMetawould"knowingly"violatethelawby utilizinganIP addressthathadpreviouslybeenregisteredwithout authorization.ThecreatorsofICPthoughtthatsuchbehaviorledDfinityto "loseorwillloseincome."

AnothersignificantissueofthecomplaintisthatDfinitydoesnotwant tobeassociatedwithFacebook'spoorimage.Facebook,nowMeta,is involvedwithdatabreaches,unlawfulinformationtrading,andother issuesforwhichtheyhavefacedmanylawsuits. AccordingtoDfinity,thiswouldresultin"severereputationalharmto Infinity,"whichmightbecriticalforthefutureofInternetcomputing protocols,especiallygivenMeta'semphasisonacentralizedplatform. Metadidnotmakeanythoughtsonthecomplaint.
