Challenges Faced by Geography Teachers Implications on Students' Academic Performance in Meme Division of the South West

This study investigates Challenges faced by Geography Teachers and their Impact on Students' Academic Performance. Data were obtained through the use of questionnaires and interviews. The target population of this study consisted of 147 Geography teachers, 120 students and 12 principals. The sample was limited to 12 selected secondary schools 4 Public, 4 Confessional and 4 Lay private in Meme Division. The sampling techniques employed were the purposive, the convenience and the simple random sampling. Data were essentially of categorical variables and they were analyzed using frequency and proportions and Multiple Response Analysis for grounding of concepts that merged from open ended questions. Reliability test was performed to assess the internal consistency of responses using Cronbach Alpha reliability analysis. Chi square test was used to compare proportions for significant difference. Relationships between conceptual components were assessed using Parametric Pearson's correlation test. Data were presented using frequency tables, charts, code grounding quotation tables and conceptual diagram. Challenges faced by Geography teachers in relation to implementation of the syllabus had a significant positive impact on students' academic performance in Geography the null hypothesis was rejected while the alternative hypothesis was accepted . Challenges faced by Geography teachers in relation to teachers' working conditions had no impact on students' academic performance in Geography the null hypothesis was accepted while the alternative hypothesis was rejected . At the end of this study, recommendations were made to policy makers, proprietors of schools, teachers, students and parents towards improving students' academic performance in Geography. Content Knowledge of Secondary School Teachers of Economics and Students Achievements in Mezam Division, Cameroon

Economics education is the pivot of all social sciences Cameroon GCE Board, 2015 . Achievement of Cameroon's vision 2035 therefore is based primarily on the successful attainment of the objectives of economics education at all levels. Yet, statistics obtained from Statistics Bureau, Cameroon GCE Board indicate that students' achievement in economics at the GCE Ordinary Level examination is poor. This study was therefore designed to assess whether teachers' knowledge of economics content influences students' achievement in economics. The sample used consisted of 03 regional pedagogic inspectors, 08 heads of departments, 33 teachers and 444 students of economics from 8 public schools in Mezam Division. The data collected with the use of questionnaires, observation checklist and interview guide were analysed using partial least square regression approach. The results revealed that teachers' content knowledge has both a direct and indirect through teachers' knowledge of students' conception influence on students' examination scores in economics. The conclusion was that secondary school economics teachers' content knowledge is an indicator of student achievement in economics but teachers are not well knowledgeable on how to transform the content in some micro and macroeconomics topics. This calls for in service trainingto equip teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills. New Teachers As Vital Members Of The Teaching Workforce

The demand for new teachers has been climbing steadily since the 1990s and is expected to continue in the foreseeable future given the increases in teacher retirement and student enrollment, lower pupil/teacher ratios, and rising teacher attrition rates. New teachers enter the profession with varying degrees of preparation, ranging from extensive coursework and classroom experience to no preparation at all. They often need special attention and support to reach their full potential as educators, but this support is sorely lacking in many schoolsu2014which may explain why large numbers of new teachers leave the profession after just a few years of teaching. The standards movement has put teacher quality at the center of educational reform. Conceived broadly, teacher quality consists of three elements: teacher knowledge, teacher qualifications, and teacher practice. In turn, these elements are affected by individual school factors and by working conditions such as class size, professional support, and school leadership. They are also affected by systemic variables such as state and local policies on teacher preparation, certification, and salaries. Teachers operate in complex, multidimensional environments, so the direct impact of teaching on student outcomes can be difficult to isolate. However, by linking student achievement to individual teachers, researchers have been able to confirm that some teachers have a lasting, positive impact on student performance, while others have a negligible or negative impact on the performance of students with similar profiles. A simple definition of teacher quality has emerged from this research, namely, the ability to increase student learning during a school year, regardless of a studentu2019s initial academic standing. But this definition, which points to academic growth as an indicator of effectiveness, does not explain why and how some teachers are more effective than others. The research that has been done on teacher credentials, while informative, does not address the actual quality of classroom instructionu2014a dynamic much more difficult to measure due, in part, to the lack of consensus on what type of instruction is most effective. Definitions of effective teacher practice, therefore, must also factor in variations in curriculum and instruction, along with the relationship between curriculum and instruction and the variables that affect that relationship. Based on five principles that describe the qualities and attributes of effective teachers, the standards have been broadly adopted by the education community as a measure of teacher excellence: -tBest teachers base their instruction on knowledge of child development. -tThey are committed to students and their learning. -tThey know the subjects they are teaching and how to teach those subjects to diverse learners. -tThey are able to effectively organize the classroom environment to engage students in the learning process and to sustain their learning so that instructional goals are met. -tAccomplished teachers are active members of learning communities; they systematically examine and improve their practice and learn from their experiences, and they are aware of the policies and resources that can benefit their students. Teacher perceptions and attitudes are, nonetheless, quite important since a teacheru2019s sense of efficacy plays a large role in the decision to remain in the profession. Some teachersu2014typically those entering the profession through an alternative pathwayu2014 do not receive any kind of classroom exposure prior to their first teaching assignment. They felt this lack of preparation placed them and their students at a distinct disadvantage. One commented on how it was u201cunfair to students to subject them to teachers who have had no student teaching or internships before teaching a class.u201d Another reason for why teachers do not feel well prepared is a mismatch between the instructional pedagogy they were exposed to in their education programs and that practiced in the schools to which they are assigned. One teacher commented that the range of instructional strategies she learned in her education program would have helped her reach her students. However, because the district office had different instructional mandates, she had to use strategies that ran contrary to those she had learned during her pre-service education. u201cOut-of-licenseu201d teachers also felt unprepared. A high school teacher assigned to teach a math class dug out old college texts to try to refresh her math skills since she had received no math preparation during pre-service training. Several teachers assigned to special education classes said they had no prior special education instructional experience or background. Teachers who described themselves as being least prepared were those with no educational preparation, other than a bacheloru2019s degree, and no educational training or support. Older teachers entering the profession as a career change felt they were able to draw upon prior work experiences to help them in their current teaching roles; most admitted, however, that nothing really sufficiently prepared them for the unique challenges of being a new teacher. The level of student ability also influenced the teachersu2019 sense of preparation. Teachers felt more prepared to teach students who were advanced or at grade level than students who were English language learners, below grade level in literacy or math, or had other special needs. Some teachers, despite their inexperience, were asked to teach a wide span of grades, as well as special education classes. These teachers felt they needed a great deal of support. Quality teaching includes not only mastery of subject matter and how to teach it, but a belief in the potential of all children to learn, an abiding ethic of care, and the creativity to inspire children who would otherwise be lost. New teachers commend principals who are instructional leaders, and those who encourage them to participate in professional development opportunities and get involved in the school community. Since new teachers often feel overwhelmed, they are not always sure what opportunities are available to them, how to allocate their time, or how they will be perceived if they participate in certain activities. Having guidance and support from the principal made these decisions much easier and gave teachers evidence that the principals cared about their professional development. Teachers greatly appreciated being observed in the classroom by their principals. Despite how anxiety producing this could be, teachers felt getting direct feedback and guidance was critical to their growth. The only complaints teachers had regarding observations was that there were not enough of them and that the principal was too gentle in critiquing them, thus limiting the usefulness of the observation. Support from principals for disciplinary decisions was another important factor in job satisfaction. Inevitably, situations concerning student discipline, some involving parents, are brought to the attention of the principal. New teachers were highly gratified, and sometimes surprised, when the principal publicly supported their decisions. More often than not, however, teachers found that principals fell short in giving them support. Some teachers said they had little contact with their principals. They described principals who were not instructional leaders and did little to bring teachers together to work with one another. Some teachers said their principals directly contributed to tensions in the teaching staff. Teachers also felt that principals, as well as other administrators, did not spend enough time in classroom observation and in providing feedback. Some teachers had not received any direct observation from a principal. Also, principals were not always helpful in giving teachers guidance. Some would criticize teachers and tell them what they did wrong, but not offer any advice on what they should be doing or show them how to do it. Principals who were ineffective building managers, and those who lacked organization and planning skills, also created stress for new teachers. Some teachers had difficulty dealing with school schedules and procedures. In some schools, schedules often changed without prior notice or explanation, disrupting instructional plans. In others, principals did not have the curriculum or instructional materials available for new teachers when the school year started. This is a particularly critical issue for new teachers who, typically, have not had the opportunity to accumulate resources and materials. Advice for Teacher Education Programs - Prepare every teacher to teach students with special learning needs, English language learners, and students achieving below grade level. A focus on the skills needed to teach these students should be integrated throughout the preparation program, to include coursework and field experiences. - Prepare teachers to address academic diversity. A focus on heterogeneous instructionu2014 meeting the needs of students with a broad range of skill levels in the same classroomu2014 should be an integral part of preparation programs, fieldwork, and in-service professional development. - Incorporate opportunities for teachers planning to teach in urban schools to gain experience working in diverse communities prior to their first teaching assignment. Advice for School Systems - Provide good working conditions. Smaller class sizes; a secure environment; and adequate facilities, equipment, and materials will attract more teachers to the profession and keep them there longer. - Give new teachers a coherent, clearly articulated school program. Administrative responsibilities should be laid out at the beginning of the school year. Changes in the daily school schedule should be kept to a minimum. - Donu2019t ask teachers to teach courses in which they have neither training nor expertise. If there are teacher shortages, give teachers professional support with the subject matter and the kinds of students they are being assigned to teach. - Provide opportunities for teachers to observe and be observed by experienced teachers. - Give new teachers more contact with school administrators. - Give teachers adequate time to participate in on- and off-site induction activities. - Assign mentors to all first-year teachers. - Choose experienced teachers as mentors and match them to new teachers according to subject-area and grade-level expertise. - Carefully select mentors; do not assign or force teachers into the mentor role. - Give mentors ongoing training and support to help them articulate expectations for teachers and plan how they work together. - Have mentors first meet with new teachers before the school year begins. - Build sufficient meeting time into the schedules of new teachers and their mentors. - Limit the teacher caseload, teaching assignments, and administrative responsibilities of mentors to give them sufficient time with new teachers. - Give new teachers opportunities to observe and be observed by their mentors. - Provide mentoring to long-term substitutes. Grade Retention Is A Response To Academic Problems - ebookschoice.com

Years after being retained, students have significantly lower achievement than similar students who were not retained. Many retained students never catch up to their promoted same-age peers with similarly low test scores. Whatever performance advantage retained students have over their younger, same grade peers is short-lived, as they typically fall behind these students after one or two years. Several longitudinal studies indicate that, relative to low-achieving students who are promoted to the next grade, retained students are significantly more likely to drop out of school. After accounting for socioeconomic status and prior performance, dropout rates for retained students often exceed comparable promoted students by 49% or more. This paper addresses the following questions: 1. After children's growth rates in achievement prior to retention (and other factors) are taken into account, is grade retention associated with significantly lower levels of school achievement and higher rates of school dropout? 2. Among children who are retained during the early school years, is participation in a comprehensive instructional intervention associated with improved school achievement and a lower likelihood of dropping out of school? Does this participation lead to better performance than promotion with remediation? The study sample for this paper includes students who enrolled in the public schools for at least six years (from kindergarten to ninth grade) and whose school dropout status was known by age 19. Children who have left the study or cannot be located are similar to those that remain in the sample on measures of kindergarten achievement and socioeconomic status. Information on grade retention and high school completion as of January 2019 were obtained from school records. School records provided descriptive information on children including gender, race, and name of the school in which the student is enrolled at the end of each school year. Standardized test scores in reading and math were obtained annually from the beginning of kindergarten through ninth grade. Teacher and parent surveys were used to obtain information on classroom adjustment, parent involvement, and family background. Two measures of educational attainment were used in analyzing the effects of retention. Data were collected from school records, surveys, and interviews from youth and, if necessary, their parents. Before investigating the association between grade retention and high school completion or dropout, a comprehensive set of predictors of retention was examined, including child and family background, early adjustment indicators (kindergarten and first grade academic performance and achievement), and intervening school experiences (e.g., school mobility and special education placement). In order of magnitude, the following factors increased the odds of being retained: low family income (children eligible for a subsidized lunch had twice the risk of retention than those not eligible); sex of child (boys had twice the risk of retention), and number of school moves from ages 10 to 14. The following factors decreased the odds of being retained: overage at kindergarten entry, number of years of average or better parent involvement in school, reading and math achievement in first grade, grade in reading in first grade, and math achievement in kindergarten. Findings that the number of school moves increases the risk of retention and parent involvement in school decreases the risk are relatively new, and especially significant. Variables such as race/ethnicity, parent education, years of CPC intervention, residence in a high-poverty school attendance area, and special education placement were not associated with retention. Findings indicate that grade retention-no matter when it occurs-is associated with significantly lower levels of school achievement and higher rates of school dropout. The students who were retained fell further behind their similarly low-achieving former classmates as early as kindergarten and first grade. By the end of their eighth-grade year, retained students were 1 to 2 years behind these former classmates. Retained students had a rate of school dropout that was 24% higher than that of promoted students (controlling for preretention achievement growth and other factors). Does grade retention harm students, or are the large estimated adverse effects of grade retention due at least in part to the difficulty in controlling for observed and unobserved differences between retained and promoted students that may be correlated with later educational attainment? The main strength of this study was the inclusion of a variety of preretention control variables such as achievement at different times that take account of such differences. Results indicated that, although there were substantial differences between the unadjusted and adjusted models, both indicated a significant link between grade retention and school dropout rates as well as lower rates of school completion. The finding that students who were retained in the first three grades did not benefit academically from 1 to 3 years of participation in the Child-Parent Center program suggests that retention plus remediation strategies may not prevent the typical achievement declines that have been shown for simple grade retention without remediation. Indeed, the CPC follow-on intervention is more comprehensive and longer-lasting than most remedial services that retained students receive under many current retention practices in schools. Moreover, comparable students who were promoted (instead of retained) and then participated in intervention for 1 to 3 years had substantial performance advantages over retained students who participated in the intervention. Grade retention is a response to academic problems. Little attempt is made to address the underlying conditions such as low motivation, poverty, poor nutrition, or inadequate instruction that cause underachievement. It would be surprising if retention or limited retention-plus policies substantially altered children's achievement. Underachieving children require educational experiences that affect their rates of early learning. Contrast this reactive approach to intervention with prevention. Instead of waiting until the early signs of academic failure are evident, proactive education support would seek to promote the skills and attitudes needed for mastery of the grade-level curriculum before learning difficulties are observed. Prevention programs do this by addressing the underlying causes that give rise to underachievement such as building language and literacy skills before formal reading instruction, instilling pride in achievement, enhancing motivation to learn, and promoting family-school partnerships to help reinforce learning at home. Not surprisingly, programs that succeed in these areas are associated with higher levels of school achievement and lower rates of grade retention. The importance of prevention is easily lost in an era of school accountability and high-stakes testing, which highlight children's learning difficulties. Given the consistent evidence that retention is not an effective strategy for improving children's school success and growing evidence that retention plus remediation strategies do little to enhance children's achievement, the alternatives to retention appear to deserve much higher funding priority than they currently receive. Statistics reveal incidents in which teachers were the victim, guns brought to school and uncounted acts of bullying, teasing, hazing, and physically nonviolent behavior. What is it that drives our children to commit these acts? Truly, all of us know the full breadth of the issues that face our students daily. Indeed, what affects the student outside the school affects that student, the teachers, and administrators inside the school. Here are a few statistics: - 1 in 2 American children will live in a single-parent family at some point in childhood. - 3 in 5 preschoolers have their mother in the work force. - 1 in 1,045 will be killed by a gun before reaching age 20. Clearly, there is enough going on here to see that, in addition to an academic focus, schools need to be attentive to the social and emotional needs of students. We can work with students to help them meet their academic goals, but if those children are unable to cope with the pressures applied by todayu2019s society, they will not attain academic success. Yetu2014despite all the media hype to the contraryu2014schools remain the safest place for our children. But it is also true that the violence that afflicts society has slowly crept into our schools. In recent years, drastic changes in the family structure, along with other societal changes, have led to new challenges. Schools are pressed to find ways to meet the needs of all children. Parents and other constituencies have found their voice and are crying for the achievement gap to be closed. Lawmakers have taken heed and now, more than ever, and states have brought assessment and accountability into focus. The work of our schools has become incredibly complex as different stakeholders compete for priority. A critical goal of the superintendent is to establish a clear vision and direction for the school district. If the vision is derived from the information presented by the diverse competing constituencies and based on scientifically rigorous evidence, then that collective vision will be one that all stakeholders can share. The guiding question then is: Given the context within which children come to school, what can schools do to help students develop good social skills so they can interact positively? In light of the changing economic and social structure, it is clear that adult nurturing, guidance, and support must come from all facetsu2014the home, the school, and the communityu2014if we are to prevent negative outcomes. Our vision is that a healthy community can collaborate to achieve positive outcomes when guided by the basic principles of academic, social, and emotional learning. And we were successful in attaining partnerships at multiple levels: locally, with the county, and even at the state level. We saw a reduction in discipline referrals and the dropout rate. And we achieved an increase in the number of graduates and the number of those bound for college. Our goal is to share ways in which superintendents can support the creation of safe, supportive, and high-achieving schools. While the superintendents had different stories to share, their work all began with an individual vision which then blossomed into a collective, community-wide vision. Such core values as academic, social, and emotional learning are an essential part of the big picture. In the end, what is it we hope to achieve? In the short term, we want to ensure that our schools are safe havens in which all students can learn, and this means safe, drug-free, violence-free schools. But we also cannot lose sight thatu2014in the long term, over timeu2014the creation of safe and supportive school communities should be integrated and comprehensive, not merely an add-on. We also want to ensure that we develop lifelong learners whou2014because they are well-educated, responsible, and respectfulu2014can be active, contributing members in our 21st-century global society. The creation of schools and districts focused on academic, social, and emotional learning. What is the best approach to show your school board that youth are not just a problem, but that youth can make a difference in peopleu2019s lives? There is no more important effort than including young people in this whole conversation. One of the things that we are doing is to create a more democratic environment, especially in our high schools, but at all levels. I think it starts even at the elementary level. For example, many schools are using class meetings as a way to bring out youth voice. The adults in our society often think that young people donu2019t have something of value to contribute. Look for adults who will bring you forward to the board to talk about the kinds of wonderful things that you have been doing, and to build those alliances and not give up. Keep coming back to the school board with whatever initiatives you would like. And keep coming back to administrators to show that you have something of value to offer. It is key that your voice is not lost in this dialogue. If you want to get the school boardu2019s attention, show up every time and take the three minutes or whatever time allotted for guests to speak. They wonu2019t want to ignore you, especially when they are running for re-election. Make an appointment with each school board member and visit with him or her individually, since they all have office hours. You will have their attention. The new teachers who came in are very willing to learn. A superintendent or a principal cannot do it alone. There have to be teachers in the school who are aligned with these philosophies. Start a pilot program and collect the data, and the data will be very impressive. Then the board and other teachers and the community cannot doubt what the data shows. There are many places to plant those seeds. You have to have perseverance. As superintendents and administrators, we are interested, but we work within a political context. And in fact, there are certain things we are capable of doing and certain things we are not. When I was a teacher, I learned from one of my principals a philosophy of u201clet your fast horses run.u201d In other words, find the people who are your advocates and let them do the things that they would like to do in terms of social-emotional programming and other areas in which you want to move forward. Many times, weu2019re surprised about where the seeds come from. We should be open to surprises and look for those people who really care about this, but may not know how to proceed and encourage them to take action. In this country, one of the biggest things we have done is said that children need to be in school in a safe learning environment. Itu2019s the goal of almost every district in the country. If itu2019s the goal, then every superintendent should hold the administration accountable for making sure that there is substantial progress towards that goal. The principal also has to hold the staff accountable. I think we need to start forcing the seeds, not just planting them. The guidance counselors are key in creating a positive climate and culture. They can be instrumental in moving the district forward in social-emotional learning. While each district utilizes distinct approaches, the superintendents all share a common vision: to create multiple, system-wide structures of support that simultaneously address the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students.
