  1. How to Downsize Before a Big Move: Decluttering Tips That Work Getting ready for a big move can feel overwhelming, especially when you look around and realize just how much stuff you’ve collected over the years. Whether you're moving across the country or just to a smaller place nearby, downsizing makes the move easier and less stressful. Plus, it can save you time, money, and space. Companies like US Van Lines Movers handle the heavy lifting, but sorting through your belongings before they arrive can make the whole process smoother. Start with one room at a time. Trying to do your whole home in a day will only make you feel burned out. Pick an area, like a bedroom or a closet, and go through everything inside it. Ask yourself: Have I used this in the past year? Do I really need it? If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go. Sort your things into three piles: keep, donate, and toss. The “keep” pile should only include things you use often or truly love. The “donate” pile is for items in good shape that someone else might need, like extra kitchen gadgets, books, or clothes. The “toss” pile is for broken or worn-out things. Items with sentimental value, like old photos or school projects, can be tricky. If you struggle to let go, take photos of them instead. That way, you still keep the memory without holding onto the clutter. For family heirlooms, consider passing them to a relative before the move. Try to stay honest with yourself during this process. It's easy to hold onto things “just in case,” but chances are, if you haven’t used them recently, you probably won’t miss them. Before you pack, take one last look at the items you’ve chosen to keep. Downsizing is a good way to reset and start fresh. The less you bring, the easier it will be to organize your new place. In the end, moving is a big job—but with a little bit of planning and a focus on decluttering, you can make it more manageable. By letting go of what you no longer need, you're giving yourself a clean slate and a lighter move. Happy packing!
