ASTM A193 specification covers alloy steel and stainless steel bolting material for pressure vessels, fittings, flanges, and valves for high temperature or high pressure service, or other special purpose applications. Several grades are covered, including ferritic steels and austenitic stainless steels designated B5, B7, B8, and so forth. Selection will depend upon design, mechanical properties, service conditions and high temperature characteristics. Material according to ASTM A193 B8 is often available in national coarse (UNC) thread pitches.

ASTM A193 B8 is a standard material specification for use in high tensile, for corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steel fasteners, high temperature and special purpose applications such as pressure vessels bolting and pressure piping. Grade B8 is a heat-treated, work-hardened austenitic stainless steel further divided into class 1, class 2& class 2B, each having a distinguished tensile strength. ASTM A193 specification covers requirements for heat-treatment, mechanical properties, chemical composition, hardness, and recommended nuts-washers for Grade B8 Fasteners. Fasteners are made of 304 austenitic stainless steel material. B8 Class 2 stud and other fasteners have a minimum tensile strength ranging from 70ksi to 120ksi depending on different sizes. Smaller sizes usually have high strength.
