  13. Pentecost and the Holy Spirit

  14. Pentecost in the Old Testament Some people actually believe that the Holy Spirit did not “show up” until the New Testament at Pentecost! Nothing could be further from the truth! Even though the term “Holy Ghost” only appears in the New Testament, “Spirit of God” and “spirit” referring to the Holy Spirit appears throughout the Old Testament

  15. Holy Spirit in the Pentateuch • Genesis 1:2 – the Holy Spirit “brooded” on the face of the earth, and is the Personality of the Trinity Who restores • The Holy Spirit would not always strive with man (Gen. 6:3); man’s days were numbered no more than 120 years • Pharaoh could tell that the Holy Spirit was with Joseph (Gen. 41:38) • Bezaleel a craftsman who built the ark of the covenant was filled with the Spirit of God (Ex. 31:3) • Spirit of God rested on Moses and his 70 leaders (Num. 11:25) • Balaam, a Gentile prophet (Num. 24:1-2) • Joshua (Deut. 34:9) – “And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid hands upon him”

  16. Job and the Holy Spirit • Job said that “By his spirit, he hath garnished the heavens” (Job 26:12); the Hebrew word “shiprah” means “the heavens were made brightness”, or more splendid as if with stars and constellations and/or with more glory • Job said, “All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils (Job 27:3) • Job also said, “The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life (Job 33:4)

  17. Judges with the Holy Spirit • Joshua (Deut. 34:9) – “And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid hands upon him” • Othniel (Judges 3:10) – he went to war and defeated the Mesopotamian king • Gideon (Judges 6:34) – he then blew the trumpet “shofar” • Jepthah (Judges 11:29) – defeated the Ammonites • Samson (Judges 13:24-25) – had power to destroy armies

  18. Kings and Others with the Holy Spirit • Saul (1 Sam. 11:6) – Saul later on sought out a familiar spirit • David (2 Sam 23:1-2) – “His word (the Spirit) was in my tongue.” • Amasai, chief of the captains of David (1 Chron. 12:18) – He “said peace, peace unto thee and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you.”

  19. Prophets with the Holy Spirit • Azariah the son of Obed (2 Chron. 15:1) • Jahaziel, son of Zechariah (2 Chron. 20:14) • Elijah (1 Kings 18:12) – “The Spirit of the Lord shall carry thee wither I know not” • Elisha – (2 Kings 2:9) – Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s mantle and spiritual power which he received when he saw Elijah go up to heaven in a chariot of fire • Many other prophets had the Spirit of the Lord come upon before they prophesied, including Ezekiel, Daniel, and all the others

  20. Pentecost in the Old Testament • Pentecost was originally the harvest festival marking 50 days and the 7th week after Passover • This was the Feast of the First Fruits, the second of the great Jewish feasts celebrated every year in Jerusalem (Ex. 23:16; Lev. 23:15; Deut. 16:9) • The celebration was in recognition of the completed harvest • Pente is the prefix for five or fifty (Penteteuch is the first five books of the Bible; the Pentagon is the headquarters for and symbol of the US Department of Defense

  21. Pentecost and Babel • At the Tower of Babel, God confounded their languages whereas before they spoke in one tongue (Gen. 11:9); Babel in Hebrew means “confusion” or even “confusion of speech, stammering” • At Pentecost, the people heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their own language (Acts 2:8) • At the Tower of Babel, men were trying to start their own false religion that had a father, mother and son God. • At Pentecost, God started a true religion based on God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the first church • The Tower of Babel later became Babylon • Jerusalem is where the Church started

  22. Holy Spirit before Pentecost • Mary was conceived by the Holy Ghost (Matt. 1:18) • Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost when she heard the salutation of Mary and when John the Baptist jumped up in her womb (Luke 1:41); The Greek word for filled is “pimplemi” and is used for the filled sponge Jesus was given, the wedding room filled with guests, a ship filled with goods, as well as for Elizabeth when about to give birth to John the Baptist • Other Scriptures indicate the word for filledmeaning to be filled with various emotions, such as confusion or envy; with the Holy Spiritfilling, our emotions should be guided by thefruits of the spirit • At the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit came in the form of a dove

  23. Holy Spirit in the New Testament • Jesus promised the Holy Spirit, the Comforter saying that Jesus would not leave us alone • When those in the upper room were of one “accord” the Holy Spirit came (Acts 2:1) • “accord” comes from the Greek word “homothumadon”; Homothumadon is a compound of two words meaning to “rush along” and “in unison”. The image is almost a musical picture in which a number of notes are played which, while different, harmonize in pitch and tone. Just as instruments of a musical concert under the direction of a concert master play, so the Holy Spirit blends together the lives of members of Christ’s church.

  24. Other Verses with Homothumadon • Acts 1:14 – These all continued with “one accord” in prayer and supplication • Acts 2:1 – And when the day of Pentecost came and the 120 disciples in the upper room were of one “accord” the Holy Spirit came • Acts 2:46 – And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart • Acts 4:24 – The lifted up their voice to God with one accord • Acts 8:6 – And the people with one accord gave heed to the things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did • Rom. 15:6 – That ye may with one mind (accord) and one mouth glorify God even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  25. Symbols of the Holy Spirit • Fire – Samson had the power of the Spirit and his bands were burned by fire (Judges 15:14); the bands of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were burned up but they were not singed • Wind – John 3:8 – Jesus said that “the wind blows … but you cannot tell from where it came, so is everyone that is born of the Spirit” • Dove – Matthew 3:16 – “Spirit of God descending like a dove” at the baptism of Jesus • Breath – Job 27:3 – “All the while my breath is in me and the spirit of God is in my nostrils”

  26. Old Testament Concepts ofthe Holy Spirit • The Holy Spirit could be taken away from believers (Psalm 51:11) • Time periods (dispensations) of God’s revelation to man are in part defined by who God sent to speak to His people – first directly to individuals, then through judges, then through kings (when godly), and then through the prophets. • Turn at God’s reproof and God would then pour our His spirit to Him (Prov. 1:23); however, there was so much evil in the world that few in the Old Testament sought God and His Spirit • The Holy Spirit is everywhere (Psa. 139:7) – “whither shall I flee from your presence”

  27. New Testament View ofthe Holy Spirit • Jesus came with a new dispensation with the coming of the Holy Spirit; He reveals himself directly to us and can speak directly through us • The Holy Spirit comes to indwell us at salvation • The Holy Spirit baptizes us with His Power • The Holy Spirit can fill us if we submit to God and away from sin • We have access to Power of the Holy Spirit since Pentecost and to Him not leaving us (Jesus said I will never leave you nor forsake you) -

  28. Our Call by The Holy Spirit • Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit – we take the God, the Holy Spirit wherever we go and in whatever we do • We must flee sin and avoid grieving the Holy Spirit • We have the anointing of Christ through the Holy Spirit • We need to seek the power of the Holy Spirit • We must seek to utilize our gifts of the Holy Spirit, and to always bear the fruit of the Spirit • We must share with others in the power of the Holy Spirit
