DESIGNING INCLUSIVE PUBLIC SPACES WITH SMART SEATING Designing for All As you enter a public space—hospital, railway station, bus station, airport, park, or government office—what do you immediately perceive? Perhaps it is the throng, the signs, the queue. But quietly yet profoundly, your experience is also influenced by something so plain yet potent: where and how you sit. At Diya Seating Solution, we’ve learned something essential over the years: public seating isn’t just about providing a place to rest—it’s about making everyone feel welcome, safe, and seen. And that’s where inclusive, smart seating comes in. We think that an truly public space is one that functions for all members of the public—young and old, abled and differently-abled, visiting solo or with loved ones. And seating has a subtle but important role to play in designing that access.
WHAT DOES "INCLUSIVE SEATING" REALLY MEAN? Being included in public design is about thinking about the varied needs of actual people who occupy public spaces daily. It's about ensuring no one is excluded just because the chair is too low to get up from, or the armrest is absent when someone has a need for it. Inclusive seating prompts: ✓Can an older person sit easily and stand safely? ✓Is there space for a wheelchair nearby? ✓Can a child sit without sliding off? ✓Will a pregnant woman or crutch-user find the seat comfortable? ✓Can anyone recline in comfort and judgment-free, regardless of size, age, or ability? These are the questions that motivate our design.
DESIGNING FOR ALL AGES AND ABILITIES One of the fundamental principles of smart seating is universal design—designing for the broadest audience possible without requiring adaptation. That's why we design waiting chairs that are: ✓ At an easy height to sit and stand, particularly for elderly individuals. ✓ Fitted with sturdy armrests, providing support when rising. ✓ Spaced with respect, so individuals aren't pushed uncomfortably up against each other. ✓ Curved at edges and constructed of slip-resistant material to avoid accidents. ✓ Comes in wide-seat versions for users with more space requirements. ✓ Placed in various locations, such as close to ramps or wheelchair-accessible areas. It's about eliminating physical and emotional barriers—so sitting down never feels like an act of struggle or hesitation.
THOUGHTFUL PLACEMENT AND ACCESSIBILITY Inclusive seating isn't just about the chair itself—it's also about where and how it's placed. At Diya, we promote thoughtful layouts: ✓ Older people, pregnant women, and people with disabilities have reserved seats. ✓ Resting chairs at resting stops along long corridors, particularly in hospitals and government offices. ✓ Seating at lower heights for children, especially for use in pediatric clinics or amusement parks. ✓ Built-in space for wheelchairs as well as regular chairs, not hidden in a corner. These small touches make a world of difference in making everyone feel like the space was designed with them in mind—not just for the average user.
SMART FEATURES FOR SMARTER EXPERIENCES As technology becomes more integrated with everyday life, public seating is evolving too. And inclusive seating is getting smarter—not just more accessible, but more helpful. Some of the smart features we’ve introduced and are continuing to explore include: ✓ QR codes or NFC tags to provide information (like health tips or waiting time updates). ✓ Long-waiting locations, including train stations and airports, should provide USB charging connections. ✓ Color-coded seating areas that assist visually impaired passengers or anxious travelers to travel more easily. ✓ Antimicrobial coatings for healthy use in hospitals and clinics. ✓ Under-seat illumination for improved night-time visibility in transport hubs. Such features aren't about one-upping technology—are about creating tangible advantages for real people, without needing them to request help.
A COMFORTABLE SEAT IS A MESSAGE Consider it—when a weary woman with a child encounters a well-positioned, clean, and supportive chair in a clinic, it says to her, "You matter." When a disabled person experiences a chair that doesn't exclude them, it says, "You belong." When a government office waiting student finds a place with room to sit and still carry their backpack, it says, "We thought of you." Public seating communicates—whether it's quiet or not. And we think those communications ought always to create affirmations of dignity, comfort, and belonging.
IT'S NOT JUST A CHAIR. IT'S A COMMITMENT. We at Diya Seating Solution take our work seriously. We understand that a little waiting chair can mean the world to an individual. For this reason, every design we develop exceeds the minimal standards. We don't just consider how beautiful it is or how long it lasts. We also consider who will occupy it—and what it will do for them. We’re proud to be part of a movement that’s making public spaces more human, more helpful, and more inclusive—one smart seat at a time. Because inclusive public design is ultimately the right thing to do, not merely a smart design choice.
