There are lots of different types of eye care specialists that you may have not even realized! Let’s take a look. Ophthalmologists An ophthalmologist is a medical physician who specializes in the medical and surgical care of the eyes, and prevention of eye diseases. Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that specializes in the anatomy, function, and diseases of the eye; which is why an ophthalmologist diagnoses and treats both medical and surgical problems of the eyes. Education – Optometrists undergo four years of undergraduate study, after which they undergo a four year postgraduate program in an optometry school. They also go in for one or two year residencies with training in a specific subspecialty area, after which they have the initials O.D. after their name. Orthoptists Orthoptists are certified allied health professionals who work under the supervision of an ophthalmologist to evaluate and treat disorders of the visual system with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movement problems. Opticians Opticians are health professionals who are trained to supply, prepare, and dispense optical appliances through interpretation of written prescriptions. They are not responsible for diagnosing or treating any problems; they can only help you get the right eye glasses and contact lenses. They learn such job skills through formal on-the-job programs; the training including technical instruction in measuring eyes or adjusting frames, under the supervision of an experienced optician. Education – Opticians undergo formal education from a number of community colleges and technical schools, which offer one-year or two-year associate degree courses.
