  1. Glaucoma is a serious eye condition, which if worsens, or isn’t treated properly, may result in permanent blindness! This is a condition that damages the optic nerve of the eye, causing severe vision loss. While glaucoma was a condition that was seen only in adults and the elderly, slowly and gradually even infants and children are becoming susceptible to this disorder. Thus, you must always keep a check on your child to look for any instances of glaucoma, or rather any other eye disease. As adults, we may be able to tell that we are having some issues. Children, if very small, may not be able to identify them. It is thus, your duty as parents, to keep a close watch on their every behaviour and move, and detect any problem. Any problem, if identified at the earliest, can also be treated at the earliest, thus eliminating the symptoms and hence, avoiding serious issues altogether. So, how would you know if your child has any glaucoma symptoms? Symptoms If the child develops glaucoma anywhere between the ages of right-after-birth and three years, he may experience symptoms of excessive tearing or a cloudy cornea. Your child may be too small to describe his condition, pain, and discomfort; so always be attentive if your child is having watery eyes all the time, or if he complains about not being able to see clearly. Get in touch with a paediatric eye practitioner immediately! Types of glaucoma Glaucoma is in itself a disorder, but it can be classified into various types, depending upon the age at which the child develops the disease. If the child has glaucoma by birth, it is known as congenital glaucoma.

  2. If the child develops glaucoma between the ages of 1-24 months, it is known as infantile glaucoma. If the child develops glaucoma after the age of three years, it is known as juvenile glaucoma. What causes glaucoma? Generally, there is no particular cause of glaucoma. However, if there is a genetic history of glaucoma or any other such serious eye problems in the family, children can be prone to develop the disease too. So, such families should be even more careful with their kids’ eye health. You must regularly be in touch with a child eye clinic in Andheri West, where regular check can be kept on your child’s eye health to identify any symptoms at the earliest. Other causes of glaucoma could be if a child has had a previous eye surgery, or a condition like neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder of the nervous system, which mainly affects how nerve cells form and grow. How can glaucoma be treated? Once you approach a doctor after looking at any of the symptoms above, he will diagnose your child’s eyes and confirm if there is a presence of glaucoma. If there is a presence, there could only be one solution to it –surgery. While there are medications and eye drops that can help in making the patient comfortable, the only way to remove glaucoma completely is through surgery. The surgery lowers eye pressure, thus preventing further damage. It is a laser surgery, where a laser is used to modify the drain to control eye pressure, or by creating a hole in the iris to improve the flow of aqueous fluid to the drain.
