  14. Introduction to Capacitance Sensing:Shunt Mode • Excitation source connected to TX generates electric field between TX and RX • Grounded finger interferes with field, reducing total field measured at RX • CDC converts capacitance at RX to digital data • Excitation Source and CDC on chip, RX and TX on external sensor PCB • Contact less • Field range is 2mm+ above plastic sensor covering

  15. 16. Registering a Sensor ActivationAdaptive Thresholds and Sensitivity • Sensor Activation is registered when measured CDC value for that sensor exceeds on-chip threshold • Threshold level can be adjusted on-chip to make sensors more or less sensitive to user touch • Threshold levels are continuously & automatically updated to cater for different fingers sizes

  17. Environmental Calibration • Changes in humidity and temperature can cause the ambient capacitance level measured from the sensors to drift over time. • With no calibration, the threshold levels remain constant. • False sensor activations, or no sensor activation, can occur when the threshold levels are not centred around the ambient value.

  18. Environmental Calibration • As the ambient capacitance value drifts, the on-chip calibration algorithm adjusts the sensor thresholds. • Now, when the sensor is activated, CDC value exceeds threshold and valid touch is registered.
