  2. DO NOW • 1. Name one piece of safety equipment used in a science lab. • 2. Name one piece of equipment used in the science lab for heating. • 3. If there is any type of accident at all in the lab, what should you do first?

  3. Do you already know the names of the lab equipment? • Work with a partner • You have 5 minutes to name as many pieces of lab equipment as possible • The winning team will receive one bio buck each

  4. Attaches to a ring stand to hold containers above other objects Iron Ring

  5. Holds small substances for close examination or minor reactions Watch Glass

  6. Used for picking up hot glassware Crucible Tongs

  7. Used for evaporating small amounts of liquid or observing materials Evaporating Dish

  25. Safety Precautions • Horseplay, pranks and mischief are not tolerated!

  28. Read the lab before beginning, listen for instructions!

  29. Know where safety equipment is and how to use it

  30. Report accidents to the teacher immediately

  31. If there is a fire in the classroom smother it with a blanketIf your clothes catch on fire DO NOT RUN!

  32. If you spill chemicals on yourself, wash it off immediately !

  33. Turn gas jets off when you are throughClean up after yourself!

  34. Do not eat chemicals, don’t put your fingers in your mouth, wash hands after handling chemicals • EAT THIS DON’T EAT THIS

  35. When using a bunsen burner………. • Never leave it unattended • Always wear goggles- don’t look into vessels of boiling liquid • Point test tubes away from yourself and others when heating

  36. Other heating tips….. • Don’t put cold water in a hot piece of glass ware • Be careful- glassware won’t LOOK hot • Heat glassware slowly- move test tubes into and out of the flame

  37. When testing odors……… • Do not stick your face in the container and sniff • Waft the odors

  38. WEAR GOGGLES AT ALL TIMES

  39. Tie back long hair and loose clothing

  40. Follow waste disposal instructions Don’t just throw things in the garbage- listen to what the teacher tells you to do with it
