Asaresultofthis,theyhaveweakcervicalflexorsandlowertrapeziusmuscles (whichformastraightline whenlookingfromtheside) andtightuppertrapeziusandpectoralmuscles (formingthecrosswhen lookingfromtheside).Wow!That’salotofwiresbeingcrossed!UCScausesaperson’sheadto seeminglyleanforward,theirbodytoappearhunched,andtheirshoulderstoacheoften. Strengthening – Strengtheningexercisesinyourphysicaltherapytreatmentwilltargetthecervical flexorsandlowertrapeziusmuscles.Themostbasicstretchisonecalledthe “chintuck.” Yourphysical therapistwillinstructyoutolayonyourbackwithyourkneesbent,withoutapillowtosupportyour head.Next,bringyourchinasclosetoyourneckaspossible,whilekeepingthebackofyourheadon thefloorandyourmouthclosed. Postural Correction – Youcandohoursuponhoursofstretchingandstrengtheningexercisesbutit’ll befornothingifyoudon’taddressyourposture!ThisistheproblemthatlandedyouwithUCSinthe firstplace.So,toaddressit,practicestandingwithyourbackandthebackofyourheadagainstawall.
