  3. Considerations before repair Even a minor tear can pose risk of spillage, enlargement or snag and has to be repaired at the scheduled downtime. It can be hazardous if there is an edge fray or cover scoring. Rips can lead to loss of strength. The load on the damaged area is transferred to the adjacent belt section. If the rip is large then the balance of the belt is compromised leading to failure of the belt.
