  1. The History That Revolutionized the World “In 1984, we introduced the Macintosh. It didn’t just change Apple, it changed the whole computer industry. In 2001, we introduced the first iPod, and… it didn’t just – it didn’t just change the way we all listen to music, it changed the entire music industry. Well, today, we’re introducing three revolutionary products of this class. The first one: is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second: is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device. So, three things: a widescreen iPod with touch controls; a revolutionary mobile phone; and a breakthrough Internet communications device. An iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator! An iPod, a phone … Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices, this is one device, and we are calling it iPhone.”

  2. The Journey so Far… Remember who spoke these words at the Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco in January 2007 where Apple unveiled its first ever mobile phone to the world? Yes, you guessed it right – Steve Jobs. Though there were phones with various functionalities available at the time when iPhone was launched, nothing can beat the charm of an Apple product and this is how it started its own world of revolution that changed the perception of humankind towards the communication device called mobile phone. Let’s dig out the history behind this revolutionized product and its creator:

  3. Birth Day Apple iPhone was first unveiled in January 2007 at an event held in San Francisco by Steve Jobs. On June 29, 2007 Apple launched the iPhone for the masses with support to third-party applications that can only be downloaded using the Safari search engine. In the early days of its existence in the tech world, the device had limited functionalities which include inability to connect to the Internet independently of Wi-Fi that made the device a handy computer that can make calls.

  4. Spec and Features The first Apple iPhone was a complete touchscreen smartphone with a capacitive multi-touch supporting 3.5-inch display having a pixel density of 165ppi. It was available in the memory options of 4GB and 8GB with no availability of memory card slot. The primary camera had 2MP lens but no secondary camera for FaceTime was provided. 412MHz ARM 11 processor was powering the handset that was based on iOS platform. The handset was capable of connecting to the vast world of Internet and going online was as easy as sending a text message.

  5. And the Wait Started… If you are amazed on seeing the excitement among the Apple lovers for the upcoming Apple iPhone 7 and the long queue that you will witness on the eve of iPhone 7 launch at the Apple stores across the world, then it’s time for a bigger shock. The excitement level of the Apple enthusiasts was at the bursting point at the time of first iPhone’s launch and a huge number of people waited outside the Apple store the whole night to get their hands on the first smartphone from their favorite brand. And this passion converted the launch into a cultural fest. In fact in UK, the fans waited in the pouring rain for iPhone.

  6. Record Sales Despite the fact that the first Apple iPhone has slow browsing speed and the owners were facing issues in typing on the touchscreen using the virtual keyboard, the sale of the device surpassed a huge figure of 5 million units. In 74 days, the Cupertino based communication giant, Apple, managed to sell 1 million units. The original iPhone was launched in 4GB and 8GB memory options with a price tag of $400 and $600, respectively.

  7. Apology Right after the launch of the first iPhone, Apple’s CEO apologized to the public. Wondering why? Well here is the reason. The Apple discounted the 8GB iPhone model but $200 and priced it at $399. This outraged those who purchased the 8GB model at $600 and seeing the aggression among the Apple lovers, Steve Jobs came in front and made a rare apology note with the promise of crediting the extra amount charged from the earlier iPhone 8GB buyers.

  8. Fun Facts There is no doubt that the launch of Apple iPhone revolutionized the communication world and changed the definition of what a mobile phone can do. There are many firsts that were introduced in the original Apple iPhone – Pinch to zoom in and out feature was one of the main attractions of the smartphone; you can now listen to the voicemails of your choice as the first iPhone came with visual voicemail feature; Safari browser was a full-fledged mobile browser that was radically different from the other mobile browsers available at that time. Most of the mobile browsers were the mobile optimized versions that showed mostly text and small images.

  9. Issues were Never Apart Though the first iPhone changed the history of smartphones, it is also true that the device had many issues. Firstly, the phone internet receptors were not made strong to conserve the battery. Secondly, the iPhone users were unable to send picture messages which even the other basic phones were able to do. Thirdly, no copy/paste feature was provided and also the 2MP camera was unable to record videos. Fourthly, the virtual keyboard was causing a lot of trouble to the users, especially to those who switched from BlackBerry to iPhone. Fifthly, iPhone was exclusively available through AT&T network that went overboard with network congestion and people were unable to make phone calls.

  10. One of the Best Inventions of 2007 Despite the major issues that iPhone had the device was declared the Best Invention of 2007 by TIME. The successor of the original iPhone – iPhone 3G – solved many of the hardware and software issues of its precursor and was again a major hit where all the handsets were sold out online before they hit the brick-and-mortar stores. Apple iPhone 3G was launched in 21 countries with the browsing and networking speed twice as fast as the original iPhone. With iPhone 3G, Apple also introduced to the world the vast Apple App Store and iTunes. Apple iPhone also won first JD Power & Associates Award and was recognized as the smartphone with highest level of customer satisfaction.
