Career scope in Pharmaceutical Science- How to go about it?

Pharmaceutical Science is the branch of health sciences that deals with the preparation and dispensing of drugs. It combines a broad range of scientific disciplines that are critical to the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies. It is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field that aims to integrate fundamental principles of physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry and biology to understand how to optimize delivery of drugs to the body and translate this integrated understanding into new and improved therapies against human disease. The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing of medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information.

  1. Career Scope in Pharmaceutical Science : How to go about it? Pharmaceutical Science: Pharmaceutical Science is the branch of health sciences that deals with the preparation and dispensing of drugs. It combines a broad range of scientific disciplines that are critical to the discovery and development of new drugs and therapies. It is a dynamic and interdisciplinary field that aims to integrate fundamental principles of physical and organic chemistry, biochemistry and biology to understand how to optimize delivery of drugs to the body and translate this integrated understanding into new and improved therapies against human disease. The scope of pharmacy practice includes more traditional roles such as compounding and dispensing of medications, and it also includes more modern services related to health care including clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. The pharmacy industry is massive in India and was valued at $33 billion in 2017. The projection is that the pharmacy industry will reach $55 billion at a CAGR of 22.4% by 2020. BPharm and DPharm : A bachelor’s degree and diploma in pharmacy will provide stable employment throughout your career. With a degree, you would be able to work as a licensed pharmacist across the country. Also, you have the privilege of choosing your work hours. For instance, you want your pharmacy to operate 24x7 – you can do that! Alternatively, if you want to work a night shift or in the emergency wing – you can do that too. Since the need for pharmacists is vast, there’s much flexibility in this career.

  2. The Bachelor of Pharmacy degree and Diploma in Pharmacy are common pharmacology programmes. The B.Pharm degree must be accredited by the All Indian Council of Technical Education or the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). The bachelor's course is a 4 year programme , while the diploma course is a 2 year programme. Both require a six month internship. Eligibility Criteria for Application in B.Pharm and D.Pharm: B.Pharm. admission requirements are as follows: applicants must be at least 17 years of age at time of admission, and are required to complete the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), or 10+2 exam in the science stream. The mandatory subjects are Biology/ Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Admission requirements vary between institutions, so in order to be considered a top candidate for admission, it is also important to get a high rank in the state or institutional entrance examination. For the admission in D.Pharm. course the applicants must be at least 17 years of age at time of admission, and are required to complete the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or 10+2 exam in the science stream. Required subjects are physics, chemistry and biology or mathematics. A minimum of 40 percent marks are needed in each course. Average course fees for this course across West Bengal and other places in India: The average B.Pharm course fee ranges from INR 40,000 to 1 lakh per annum and may differ according to universities/colleges standards.

  3. Diverse Career Opportunities: Pharmaceutical sciences diverse career with many opportunities in scientific research, development, patient care and entrepreneurship. There is a huge variety of job roles available for pharmacists after B Pharmacy admission and degree completion. Once you get your B.Pharm. degree, you will be able to work in a lot of different settings. However, patients will be the primary people that will surround you. As a pharmacist, you will find your role across different healthcare settings including ambulatory, inpatient, and community. There are so many different and diverse roles available for a pharmacist that they work in multiple settings involving people. As a pharmacist, in addition to providing medicines, there are other services that you would provide. Pharmacists provide asthma care, cholesterol screening, blood pressure monitoring services, smoking cessation consultation, diabetes disease management, bone density scans and more. The most obvious choice for pharmacists is working in retail pharmacy, either in a healthcare facility or community. In this role, they provide over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications along with counselling to the patients. They can even work in the pharmaceutical industry, teach at university or conduct research. It may range between INR 2,00,000 - INR 5,00,000 per annum. The salary and other incentives will increase once the individual will complete the Master course for the same. Experience is the key to become entitled to a higher remuneration.

Placement Scope in India and Abroad After the completion of B.Pharm degree, there are various opportunities for students, they can either go for higher studies like M.Pharm, MBA. or Ph.D degrees for improving their skills and up gradation of their degree or they can go for jobs in the chemical companies, research institutes, Pharma companies, even universities and colleges. Some of the B.Pharm graduates are choosing to fly overseas and make their career bright. By scoring well in GRE, TOEFL, IELTS entrances they can pursue MS, MBA and other pharmacy related courses in US, UK, Australia etc. The types of pharmacy degrees available, may vary depending on where you study pharmacy. If you want to study pharmacy abroad, or would like to be able to work in different countries after graduating, it is important to check where your qualification will be recognized.
