All about Alcatraz: - Alcatraz was a famous prison on an island in the San Francisco Bay. - It was originally military owned to protect California against the gold rush in the 1850s. - Around 1860 it opened and operated for military personnal, - It became a prison for 29 years ( 1933-1963) because maintenance rates were too high. - Even though it is no longer a prison it is still a huge tourist attraction.
Prisoners in Alcatraz: - Prisoners kept in Alcatraz were extremely dangerous and high profile. - Conditions in the prison were harsh and cruel. Prisoners only were entitled to four rights; medical, shelter, food and clothing. - Visitors were earned through extreme labor and work. - Punishments included hard labor, wearing a 12 pound ball, prisoners were kept in solitary confinement and restricted to bread and water
Famous Prisoners: - Many claimed to escape the prison would be almost impossible There were 14 escape attempts, two of the prisoners tried to escape more then once ; 7 were shot, 2 drowned,5 are unknown, and the rest were caught. - One of the most famous escape attempts occurred on June 11th, 1962, three guys (Frank Morris, Clarence, and John Anglin) escaped from the prison and were never found. There even was a film made about it “Escape from Alcatraz”. - Famous: George “Machine Gun” Kelly, killing, bank robbery and murder; 17 years, Al Capone, 11 years in Alcatraz, Arthur "Doc" Barker, who committed theft, robbery, murder, and kidnapping between 1936 and 1939, was executed by a jail officer after attempting to flee Alcatraz.
