Learning to Regulate Ourselves: Reacting vs. Overreacting

Sometimes difficult situations, such as arguments or miscommunications, can cause people to become angry and instead of reacting the way that they should, they overreact. Of course, it is important to react to situations and feel emotions when we should, but there is a difference between reacting and overreacting. Overreacting to a situation can be off-putting and it can cause rifts between friendships. Learning how to regulate yourself and your behavior when you are angry can help keep your relationships healthier.

  3. The Danger of Overreacting You cannot take back whatever you say when you are angry. Take the time to be wise about how to act when you are angry. It helps to control your actions and the words that you say. Being mindful when something unfortunate happens can help you express your emotions clearly but gently, while not pushing people away. Learning to Slow Down and Analyze the Event When something happens that causes you to be angry, it’s important that you take a breath and take a little time to analyze the event. Just a few seconds can

  4. make a difference. It will give you a moment to decide how you want to react to the event. When you don’t take a moment to analyze the event that would make you angry, you may overreact with rage instead of an appropriate amount of anger. Learning how to calm yourself before you react is one way of making sure that you don’t push away people that you care about. Talking with a counselor can help you become more mindful and allow you to understand how to properly react when you are going through something that you don’t know how to deal with. Counselors can give you insight and help you walk through where you may have overreacted and how to manage your emotions.
