  1. THYROID PROBLEMS – ITS SYMPTOMS, CAUSES AND TREATMENTS By:- Calcutta Heart Research Centre And Diagnostic Pathology Lab, Kolkata, West Bengal, India

  2. Of the diseases that affect the human body, the thyroid gland is the most liable to cause problems. Unlike other diseases, the thyroid problems - symptoms, causes and treatments are difficult to understand and unknown to the majority population. This lack of knowledge has caused severe discomfort and sometimes even death for the patients. As a human being, it is necessary for us to have a basic understanding of the important organs that make up our body. In the 21st century, with the advancement in medicine and education, most of us know about the organs of our body. But our knowledge is limited only to parts like heart, lungs, liver and some even know about the brain. The reason for these organs' fame and notoriety is that they directly affect the human body, both positively and negatively. Even though these parts of our body are important for us to function, there are other organs that are equally if not more important.

  3. GLANDS:- Glands are a network of organs that are found throughout the body. Each gland is connected to the other, so much so that the malfunctioning of one would severely affect the others. While most people don't know this, the glands are vital for our survival. Most of our daily activities which we do easily would be affected if not for these significant glands.Every gland produces and secretes hormones that perform a specific task in the body. There are two types of glands, which are:- Exocrine glands Endocrine glands

  4. 1. EXOCRINE GLANDS: The exocrine glands secrete substances, that are not hormones, into the epithelial surface through the ducts and cavities. Some examples are sweat, saliva, tears and mucus.Exocrine glands are in no way less important than the endocrine glands. They perform vital roles for our body like protecting the skin, regulating body temperature, moistening our eyes and even help mothers generate breast milk Some of the most important exocrine glands include:- Salivary - glands within the mouth that secrete saliva with digestive enzymes Sweat - underneath the skin secretes sweat to keep the body warm Mammary - breast milk Sebaceous - underneath the skin secretes oils Lacrimal - Tear ducts and glands near the eyesSometimes even lymph nodes are called glands but they are not.

  5. 2. ENDOCRINE GLANDS: Unlike the exocrine glands, the endocrine glands are part of the interconnected endocrine system. These glands secrete hormones and release them into the bloodstream. These hormones largely influence our life and health. Some of the most important functions of the endocrine glands are : Growth and development Metabolism Mood Reproduction Organ development The endocrine system consists of glands that includes:- Adrenal gland 2. Pituitary gland 3. Pineal gland 4. Thyroid gland 5. Hypothalamus 6. Pancreas 7. Ovary / Testes

  6. Thyroid Gland:- It produces hormones that play a vital role in many different systems in our body. It is a peculiar gland that causes problems both when it secretes more or less than the required hormone level. It plays a major role both in our growth and metabolism. Thyroid problems:- The diseases caused by thyroid glands are classified into two types. They are hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and thyroiditis. People affected by Thyroid:- The thyroid doesn't discriminate when it comes to affecting people. It can affect anyone from men, women, teenagers and even infants. Hypothyroidism is prevalent even among newborn babies. Women are 5 times more prone to be affected by thyroid than men. Factors such as family history, diabetes and age influence thyroid diseases.

  7. SYMPTOMS:- Symptoms for thyroid-related diseases are not few, but unfortunately, they are much similar to the symptoms of other deadly diseases as well. Even the symptoms for thyroid are of two types. Hyperthyroidism symptoms :- Experiencing anxiety and nervousness Insomnia Loss of weight Goiter or enlarged thyroid gland Muscle weakness Menstrual problems Hypothyroidism symptoms : - Fatigue Weight gain Frequent menstrual periods Hair loss Seizures

  8. CAUSES:- The balance of our body's chemical reactions may be affected when the thyroid doesn't secrete enough hormones and this will affect our body. Some of the most common causes of the thyroid problems are : - Autoimmune disease Pregnancy Pituitary disorder Iodine deficiency Congenital disease

  9. TREATMENTS:- If a person experiences any of the above-mentioned symptoms in them, they are advised to immediately contact their family physician.
