Elena Turanskaya’s success journey is one such story which shows sheer dedication, compassion, and result of constant learning. In an interview with CIO Look, Elena Turanskaya shares the insight of her version of leadership, challenges she faced and gives advice to upcoming leaders. Below are the highlights of the interview: and sea transport routes. COVID-19 itself did not come unnoticed at our company as we had to shut down for a while due to large quantity of infected employees. Still, we recovered and managed to catch up with our obligations towards our customers and partners. Despite the negative effect of COVID-19 over economies worldwide we still are able to see some potential positive outcomes. We are in smart metering industry and COVID-19 being on the one hand a stopper of smart metering deployments and a reason for delay or postponement of many projects is at the same time a trigger for smart metering rollouts for the countries that were previously reluctant to prepare their smart metering roadmaps. What were the challenges you came across since founding the organization in 1992? I joined the company in 1998 and I was very proud to be a part of the innovative company. People in Moldavia in the late 90’s were still Soviet-minded, meaning short sighted, very conservative and were not very open to any new adventures. I had to break that somehow. It was not easy, but I love people, I listened and learned from them, and that was the way to their hearts and their minds. Being an experienced business leader, what is your opinion regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the electronic manufacturing industry? And how has managed to overcome this ADD Grup significant challenge? COVID-19 has indisputably created a slow-down of economies and industries worldwide. Electronic industry is not an exception, especially that it all started in China, - the biggest supplier of the electronic components in the world. Besides component delivery delays due to lock-down we had to face supply chain issues related to cancellation of flights, as well as land In the lockdown period it was determined that usage of smart meters greatly facilitates life for consumers as well as for electricity distributors. With mandatory social distancing and isolation smart metering removes necessity for personal presence of the controller to check the indications, disconnect or reconnect consumer due to payment issues. Electricity distributors can easily determine load peaks, check every user indication and avoid accidents on lines. Thus, in the next few years we expect business to grow
again and maybe at a much higher pace than it was expected a year ago. Last few years there is a discussion about possible introduction of AI (Artificial intelligence) into smart meters to enable inferring when and how often particular appliances are used in the home through load disaggregation or non-intrusive load monitoring algorithms. This will make even deeper integration already on the level of Smart Home with the ultimate goal to help consumer use electricity in most optimal way. Increased resource efficiency will result in lower utility bills for homeowners, with the opportunity to repurpose savings toward healthcare, education, and other needs. What is your thought on the necessity of a positive work culture? In what ways do you implement it at your organization? Because people are spending a lot of their time at work, certainly there should be the positive culture within an organization. Coming to work we need to enjoy the work, communication with the colleagues and get satisfaction from what we do. The company has created an internal Code of Ethics that describes company values (professionalism, mutual respect, openness for dialogue, etc). It governs relationships between company management and employees preventing abuse and discrimination, encouraging and appreciating initiative, as well as relationships between employees encouraging team building inside specific departments as well as between the departments. In what ways have you or the community? If given a chance, what change would you bring to help other utility companies? Ÿ Probably here we could speak about global and local contribution. On a global scale where we delivered around 7 million smart meters to more than 30 countries, our smart metering solution has a multipurpose contribution. Below are few of them Ÿ Detection and prevention of electricity theft. Ÿ Remote metering and accurate bills Ÿ Load management Ÿ Multi-tariff metering. Ÿ Detailed energy consumption pattern Ÿ Power quality control Ÿ Integration of renewable generation. ADD Grup contributed to According to you, what could be the next big change in the electrical manufacturing industry? Certainly, it is difficult to assess electrical manufacturing industry as a whole, given that we are just in a specific segment of Smart Metering and Smart Grid. But if we speak about our domain, we expect times of deep integration between Smart Metering and Smart Grid components, enabling precise and safe adaptation of electrical grid to dynamic change of demand and supply of electricity. On a local scale we have created jobs to almost 400 people. We are among the largest exporters in our AD11A.1-7-1
home country contributing to country GDP growth and to decreasing negative balance in trade deficit. We are for many years the third largest taxpayer in electronic industry in our home country thus contributing to improvement of economic situation of our country. We are an active participant in Alliance of Electronics Manufacturers in Moldova and contribute with our advice and initiatives for improvement of legislation and regulations that would help the electronic industry become more competitive on global scale. created opportunities to learn from many great Russian, European and American authors and better understand cultures, mentality and values. This has created a positive impact on interaction with partners and customers from more than 30 countries, where our company has implemented smart metering projects. Probably the most relevant to mention for today would be “Only the paranoid survive” by Andrew Grove that teaches how to use crisis period as a launch pad for growth. What would be your advice for aspiring and emerging women entrepreneurs in the electronic management industry? This advice will be for all women: Love people, enjoy what you do, appreciate your good and bad experience, always be yourself and never stop, no matter what! What is your vision for the company for the next five years? Europe is closing in terms of smart electricity metering as most of countries have already decided over their smart metering rollouts and have chosen the suppliers. Now it is time to move to Middle East and Latin America where the processes have just started, and we are able not only to become part of those but given a vast experience can also become influencers in regard to technology and standards that shall finally be demanded in the projects. Have you in any ways contributed towards the cause of women empowerment. Probably not in a direct way. Smart Metering and Smart Gird is a men’s world given that most decision-makers are male. I am one of those women who with own example can show that men and women have equal potential in any industry. For the water metering we are just making first steps in the industry. Despite this, we already have raised a lot of interest among potential partners in Europe and Middle East through the innovative approach in design of water metering solution and they are impatiently waiting for the product to be certified. Despite a big quantity of projects, we are expecting from the B2B market segment an aggressive pricing policy from Chinese competitors makes it less and less attractive. Therefore, we are seriously investing into B2C solutions where innovations play the most important role. What people, what books, what life factors have influenced and impacted you? I would characterize myself as an old-school person used to learn from books and great authors digging deep into analysis and making my own conclusions rather than looking on the web for easy answers. Besides personal preferences for books a great variety have been read through mandatory programs at the universities and as I have graduated from several universities in Moldova as well as studied in US, this AD13A.3-18-1 AD11A.1-13-1 AD13A.6-3-1

ANAMIKA GUPTA W for others and encouraging up-and-coming women to step up to fulfil their leadership potential. An ardent leader, Anamika Gupta, Director and Head of Customer Marketing at Fujitsu America, Inc., is the epitome of such inspirational leadership. A Fearless Leader and A Strategic Marketer omen are fierce when it comes to weathering the storms of life. In the world of leadership, they are setting an example the solution. She believes that trusted relationships are built on the consistent delivery of added value, from interactions with customers, partners and colleagues right through to friends and family. To deliver this value in every interaction, she always maintains her curiosity, empathy, and innovative spirit. It’s these traits, and a network of great mentors, that have helped Anamika progress through her career. A Creative Marketing Professional As a creative thinker, Anamika aims to blend the art of storytelling with the science of marketing automation. By using her experience across brand building, demand generation via field/industry marketing and account- based marketing, influencer marketing, partner marketing, and customer marketing across three continents, she strives to combine the perspective of the 30,000-feet visionary with the on-the-ground executor. Anamika started her career in a fairly male-dominated environment with few strong female role models; however, she had a few very strong male leaders, who not only guided her, but often carried the torch in her journey to become a proficient and “fearless” woman in business leadership. Outside work, Anamika has her mom and dad, both of whom are a big influence on her and a great source of inspiration. She was born in a fairly conservative society, where girls studied well only to get married well; but Anamika wasn’t raised with that mindset. She was always told, “Dream big and have the courage to follow your dreams. When you face a roadblock, be optimistic and creative to find a different route to achieving your dreams; you may not see your options at first, but with perseverance you will find the path.” To this day, she follows this advice. While Anamika is most proud of building significant, sustainable, award-winning marketing programs and developing strong marketing professionals with an entrepreneurial growth mindset, she is also proud of the multiple learnings she has had in her journey so far. By applying learnings from her experience and developing new ways of thinking, she has helped organizations like Fujitsu to create trust-based, long term client relationships, while influencing a number of multimillion-dollar deals with complex, large-scale IT and consulting services. She also really enjoys sharing these learnings and experiences with others, including her team and as a speaker at a number of industry and marketing conferences and seminars. While working with and managing multi-cultural teams at very large global cross-functional matrixed organizations, Anamika realized she also has a natural passion for developing trusted, value-based relationships. She has this innate curiosity of understanding the challenge first and then getting to 16 | March 2021 |

She then engages them in a value-based conversation while building a trust-based long-term partnership. This process of diversification into its client ecosystem has worked quite successfully for Anamika and her team. Create and deliver value in the things you do. That’s the key to building trust-based long-term relationships, providing a strong platform for your personal growth. Giving Back to the Community By her stakeholders, both internal and external, Anamika is known as “fearless, innovative, and passionate” leader. With her team here at Fujitsu, she is committed and focused on making sure she is continuing to make a positive difference in advancing the company’s purpose “to build trust in society through innovation”. As an advocate for women in business, technology, mentoring and professional support in B2B sales and marketing, Anamika is passionate about sharing her knowledge and developing the skills of fellow marketers. She is an active member of the DFW*ATW (DFW Alliance of Technology and Women) community and Women’s Innovative Network (WIN) at Fujitsu, supporting women in technology, helping to create future business leaders, and influencing STEM curricula for girls. Before jumping into making a decision on diversification of Fujitsu’s services, Anamika remains agile, preferring to take a step by step process. And she considers the first and most important step to be listening to her clients. She partners with her sales team to listen and step into her clients’ shoes to learn about their pain points and challenges. It helps the company not just be a good partner, but a truly wise partner. As a next step, she identifies how her team can deliver extreme value by carefully crafting a relevant solution (of services/products), then aiming to diversify to enable the client not only survive but thrive in this dynamic, ever-changing market. Her team also leans towards the company’s partner ecosystem; she knows they can’t do it all on its own if they want to present a genuine, holistic and future-proof business solution/services/products to clients. This leads her team to the next step in the diversification of services – getting her client’s attention. She is actively involved in volunteering her time and support to non-profit www.fmsc.org/ (Feed My Starving Children). She actively supports an LGBTQ+ inclusive workplace and was delighted that Fujitsu was recently recognized as one of the "Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality!" (https://www.hrc.org/resources/corporate-equality- index) During the pandemic, she has helped to bring community and families together in an effort to foster a new sense of togetherness and happiness among local families. Be You to Create the Change In her advice to upcoming business leaders, Anamika asserts, “At the core, be you! Always! You, and only you, know who you are and what you’re worth. Nobody else! When you are being yourself, you have the power and confidence to create change, whatever the challenges. Be brave in chasing your dreams. There will be obstacles, and you will make mistakes. Make sure you learn from them and keep moving forwards towards your goal.” A survey of Canadian media consumption by Microsoft concluded that the average attention span has fallen to eight seconds, down from 12 in the year 2000 - https://time.com/3858309/attention-spans-goldfish/. She is specialized in cross border business transactions and combines all these skills and expertise for the benefit of her international clients assisting them in getting deals done and finding solutions that achieve the best results for their actual needs. Edith is the Managing Partner at ACG International. In her role she is responsible to select the best team for each assignment. This is quite different than in any other law firm as she really looks for the best team for each and every job searching at various firms to get just the right people. She wants the best result for her clients and not keeping her own lawyers busy if they are not the right fit for an individual project. For this, she uses her enormous network that she has built up personally in the last 20 years with trusted colleagues all over the world. Being fluent in German (native speaker), English, Dutch, French and Italian, Edith understands difference in mentality, culture and legal systems, assisting her clients in a unique way. broader network of professionals. It works side-by-side with attorneys from across the world, specialized in different jurisdictions, legal systems and areas of law, which allows the company to assist its clients in the most profound way. The challenge is to win the international clients’ trust as the system works differently in a different country. Besides, ACG encourages its people to join and to contribute to society as well. Pay it forward is an important philosophy within ACG International. Maintaining Personal Relationships According to Edith, the focus of many other law firms during the COVID-19 was on saving their own business instead of saving their clients’ business. Edith and her ACG team focused on their clients’ needs right away. She believes that more than ever a trusted personal relationship is important. Especially in cross border businesses, law firms fully need to understand the cultural differences in order to being able to assist their clients in the best possible way. She asserts, “Everyone thinks that his home situation - business wise as well as legally – is normal. That’s why we as service providers need to understand what our clients think that “normal” is and explain them from there how the current situation deviates from their normal and what this means – especially during a time of crisis.” choices are not primarily tax-driven but want to understand how they are business driven. Together with its specialists worldwide, the firm then line up the top 3 scenarios – of course including tax – also taking into account the reputational risks of the scenarios. This is how it has won tenders from much bigger competitors in the field. ACG International is further planning to expand its network further with inspiring and dedicated people in order to strengthen the quality it can deliver to its clients. “If you just carry on with your routine not taking this into consideration you will lose your client’s trust along the way,” she adds. It’s all About Focusing on Your Burning Desire Ensuring Comfort to Clients In her advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs in the Employment Law, Litigation, & Alternative Dispute Resolution Industry, she emphasizes on studying hard continuously and pursuing quality. Sustaining operations so far has not been a problem for ACG. As the firm has been working with its clients for many years, it knows where its clients would probably need its support and the organization offered it directly by also explaining why they needed it. “Be very honest about what you are really good at and what your burning desire is. A burning desire means that you will go for it day after day, go to sleep with it and wake up with the spirit to work on it. Money is not a burning desire – money is a result of your success. Therefore, don’t choose something because you think you can earn the most. This will not work,” Edith advises. Edith is of the opinion that explaining upfront how things are going to be, makes clients at ease and trust the company. This all leads to smooth continuation of the operations and comfort to ACG’s clients. The firm is fortunate to have been given the chance on various occasions to mitigate risks for companies in International Trade and Innovation. It makes sure that With aforesaid she also asserts, “And don’t try to be like a man – be yourself!” 23 | March 2021 |
Changing Scope of Leadership Roles in Corporate Setting 26 | March 2021 |
Evolution of Leaders T ransition and adoption of a new approach in any leadership can certainly create variability. Questions and doubts were raised on whether the new leader can seize the opportunity, Will he or she be able to build an ethical team? Will his or her strategies be successful in upsurging the graph? And, there are several other queries based on the role that was hand over to the leader. It is the foremost job of leaders to direct the competing needs and demands of the organization. One might have focused on marketing the products in the market but failed to take note of balancing the demand and supply in the market. A leader must be considering investment and business results but merely paid any attention to future needs, research, and innovation. The pace of change is constantly taking up arms in the corporate world, so it is no surprise that the transitions of executives have increasingly become common. Leaders now believe in restructuring their management teams and be patent with what are the required options and needs – merging the list of “to-dos” with that of “not-to-do”. Recent studies have found that after only a few years of transition, executives face troubles while negotiating their shifts and end-up with disappoints and failures. A number of shifts and transitions exist within a company that cause blunder and collapse in the navigation of sustainability, namely – politics, work culture, policies, and people. It is important to understand that the initiatives, techniques, and dynamism that were taken in the previous roles will not demonstrate their success in the current role. A leader must be evident and clear on what he wants to implement and with what he absolutely cannot take a chance. Successful leaders are more transparent on what and when to stop or delay rather than on what to start for business growth. When new initiatives are proposed, senior executives should address their management team on what to focus more and how to free up the resources and time for the prior jobs that need to be implemented. Although, it is not necessarily true that such catastrophe is for the leaders who are outsiders. 70 percent of internally recruited and 79 percent of leaders hired externally have pointed out that implementing a new culture is rather difficult which paralyzes the positive effort of change in the organization. When climbing towards the broader roles, certain skillsets can successfully make the transition in a corporate setting. Shifting focus from a specialized to a widespread, if you focus on the functions where you are efficient and ignore or pay less attention to others that are amateurish to you – then that is the first step of getting collapsed in the transition. Leaders should cultivate the skills of fluid analysis, where they need to save their time from irrelevant meetings and decisions making – and realize when the focus is required, what is the broad view here. They must develop the ability of pattern recognition to distinguish important and causal relations, the complexity of a business, and segregate the informational signals from an unending signal wave of noise. At last, they should manifest the ability to predict the response of their competitor, targeted consumers, and market, to take decision and actions through mental semblance. Therefore, leaders should develop a strong ability to make a decision that can be fruitful for the business as a whole. Recognize and evaluate the talents of their team based on the needs of the project. Understand and implement the different approaches for different disciplines with various tools that are utilized to analyze the specific domain – Finance, Human Resource, Marketing, Research & Development, and Operations. Create a standardized scheme for evaluation that can fabricate 360-degree feedback and performance rating. What leaders fail to understand is that - rather than defeating their competitors they can become a diplomat – with better conflict management, negotiation, and structuring association. This strategy helps to fabricate the external environment of business and collaborating with organizations that were once viewed as the competitors in the market will ultimately generate generous revenue for them. One should shift leadership role from analyzing to assimilation. The primary role of leaders is to collect the particulars from the managing leaders and then analyze and integrate that information to get a solution for organization hiccups. 27 | March 2021 |
Ellen Voie, President/CEO Women In Trucking Associa?on, Inc. 30 | March 2021 |
Ellen Voie “ omen appreciate flexible work W and support women's professional development and advancement. It is important to find resources, best practices, innovative ideas, and content to ensure such corporate cultures. These changes all lead to women's empowerment. Ellen Voie's whole career has been in empowering women, and therefore she is one of the most admirable women leaders in business. As Founder of the Women In Trucking Association in March of 2007, Ellen Voie now serves as the nonprofit organization's President/CEO. The group's mission is to promote women's employment in the trucking industry, encourage and support them, remove obstacles that might keep them from succeeding, and celebrate its members' successes. Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone. We need to challenge and push ourselves to see where our limits lie. “ arrangements, fair compensation, and inclusive corporate cultures that encourage Earlier Sense of Timeliness Ellen says that losing her mom at an early age gave her a sense of timeliness. She felt that she had to push herself to achieve everything possible in a short amount of time because Ellen did not know how many years she had to accomplish her goals. Her mom also believed in her and encouraged and supported her before she was diagnosed with a fatal illness (ALS) when she was a teenager. Promoting Gender Diversity in Workforce The Women In Trucking Association's mission is to make women aware of career opportunities and mentor and assist them as they become more successful in their roles. Women In Trucking Association is not limited to women only, as 15 percent of its members are men who believe in the association's goals. Many companies in transportation are reaping the benefits of stable workforce diversity. Gender diversity brings new perspectives, fuels more 31 | March 2021 |
significant idea generation, problem-solving, and innovation, increasing business performance and overall revenue generation. Access to relevant market intelligence, content, networking, collaboration, and best practices helps achieve this. Ellen has a vital role in promoting gender diversity. many people view careers as drivers as being something only men can do. This isn't the case. Many women see these trucks as just a diesel engine and smokestacks instead of all the technology that makes the truck easier to operate and ultimately much safer for both the driver and those on the road around the truck. Changing the Image of the Trucking Industry The pandemic has strengthened the group's mission by proving the value the trucking industry brings to the economy. Professional drivers were on the front line, delivering the needed supplies while putting their health at risk. Professional drivers brought toilet paper, sanitizer, food, and gas to the public while their safety was compromised. Restaurants and rest areas were closed, reducing the places drivers could access sanitary facilities and decent meals. Yet, they did their job without complaining. The non-trucking public has seen the trucking industry's importance and how jobs are still stable and available. Ellen's first challenge was in starting a nonprofit association in the middle of a recession (2007). Creating an organization requires a strong commitment, both financial and personal. She knew that she had to prove that Women In Trucking Association is a viable group that would provide a valuable resource to its members. In its first year, it attracted 500 members, which was impressive considering it was a challenging year for everyone. The next biggest challenge Ellen faced as an organization was in changing the image of the trucking industry. Too 32 | March 2021 |
Supported by a Passionate Leadership Team Valuable as a Board Member The organization is supported by a passionate leadership team, highly engaged members, and committed sponsors and partners. Women In Trucking Association has five employees and an association management firm that supplies six more staff members, all working in a virtual environment, making collaboration even more challenging. However, the group's work culture promotes both independence and self-motivation. Ellen believes in a results-oriented work environment, so she doesn't monitor hours or days, and vacations and time off is unlimited. The caveat is that each of its team members has a job to do, and they are responsible for ensuring that the job is done. In other words, Ellen treats people like adults and asks them to do their job. If someone wants a day off, they are free to do so, as long as they don't compromise any commitments. For Ellen, her training as an association executive and her certification (CAE) makes her valuable as a board member for other nonprofit associations. She started both a trade/professional IRS 501(c)(6) association and a charitable 501(c)(3) foundation, so her insight has been sought out by other organizations. She knows how to write by-laws, work with a board and a staff and still serve its members, so she is often asked to serve on other nonprofit boards. This is her way of contributing. 33 | March 2021 |
Marina Tognetti An Epitome of Strong Leadership Marina Togne?, Founder and CEO mYngle 34 | March 2021 |
A strong leader is not the one with no faults, as we all have faults, but the one who is so self- confident to be able to show her vulnerabilities without being scared that it would impact on her strength, so believes a fearless entrepreneur, Marina Tognetti. Marina has been an accessible role model for other women in tech, she is trying to give a genuine picture of what it takes to be an entrepreneur, the ups and downs that everyone has but few want to share. Marina is the Founder and CEO of mYngle, a global language learning training platform where learners can take live online lessons from trainers located in any part of the world. mentions that, even before COVID, the training market was already in the transition from offline to online, the shift accelerating in the recent years. This age of quarantine, social distancing and remote working fast- tracked the trend, and online education in many cases has become the only possible way of learning. In response to this increase in demand for online training, many traditional offline players have been rushing to find a quick-fix, moving their existing solutions online. Good remote training, however, is not just a matter of adding a tech solution for the virtual classroom and moving a teacher from a physical classroom to a computer, but it requires a whole new set of expertise and capabilities different from those of offline education. The way the training is delivered, the teaching, content, interaction etc., all need to change in order to provide a good user experience. Besides, Marina regularly, at international conferences, gives lectures on the topics of female leadership and entrepreneurship, and won numerous awards for her role of a woman in technology, such as 50 Most Inspiring Women Tech Leaders in Europe, 50 Most Inspiring Women in the Dutch Technology Sector, Iconic Women Creating a Better World for All, and many others. mYngle, being one of the pioneers in live online (language) training, is at the cross-road and can benefit from many years of experience and proven capabilities to deliver successful online training. Personalized Language Learning Training Platform mYngle offers customized language training programs through video conferencing in 45 different languages anytime, anywhere. Its lessons are one-on-one, with highly qualified native coaches and related to the learner’s job position. Its virtual classrooms enable learners to take classes 24/7. mYngle is the solution for busy professionals who need language training to be successful in their international business, and for companies that want great learning results and a transparent and controllable learning process to make their investment a success. A Pioneer in Live Online Training When the company started, it was pioneering, amongst the first to provide one-to-one teaching of all languages over the internet. That meant that it had to bypass all sorts of resistances - those of a still immature market- especially the stereotypes that consumers had in their minds about education. Now, with COVID, all changed, and the world is embracing online education. Soon it will become the custom, setting the standards in terms of quality and flexibility. Marina saw that before many others did. She 35 | March 2021 |
zones.‘‘‘‘ Embracing Risks The one factor that impacted Marina most is the way she overall led her life, as she has never been afraid of taking (calculated) risks. There was the move from Italy to Holland when she was just 23 years old, the sabbatical year to travel the world. All those things built her foundation to be able to start her own company. Great things never come from comfort In Marina’s opinion an entrepreneur must not be afraid of taking (calculated) risks, as great, and sometimes unforeseen opportunities come from taking risks. Accepting a risk also helps overcome the fear of failing. It is a great motivation to know that, no matter what challenges we meet along the way, we can always find a solution. If we are willing to take risks and make the hard choices and changes needed, there is nothing we cannot achieve. 37 | March 2021 |
Stimulating a Culture of Experimentation Imparting Wisdom At mYngle, Marina stimulates a culture of experimentation and allowing mistakes. She believes that innovation cannot exist in a culture of fear of consequences, and thus, she tries to develop people who think and not only do ‘jobs’. “ In our staff we look for entrepreneurs, people who do not keep the status quo, but push themselves beyond their comfort zone. If you try ten new things, some will fail, some will be OK, and one will make a difference. We are looking for that ‘special one’,” she asserts. Marina advises aspiring entrepreneurs to stop comparing. She states, “The stories you read about the few who ‘’got it all’’ are rare exceptions and often not the full truth. Let that go off that. Try to imitate types of leadership you see around but which are not you and be really true to yourself. Don’t look around for answers, look inside.” Making a Difference One of Marina’s aspirations for the coming future is to give more space to the idealistic inner voice, the voice that believes in giving something back for a better world. She says “I walked this path and learned a lot. That brought me to a privileged position, where I can act and implement new ideas that can make a difference. I can now use my skills to make the world just a little bit better” 37 | March 2021 |

PaigeArnof-Fenn P eople do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.” This famous quote has been attributed to many people including Teddy Roosevelt. Paige Arnof-Fenn finds it helpful because she considers that it is a simple reminder to listen more than talk even online, show empathy, and try to look at the situation from another perspective. She considers that the goal is not to wear others down or impress them with one’s smarts, the goal is to connect, communicate clearly, solve the problem, and move on. Because of this genuine approach Paige Arnof-Fenn is one of the most admired women leaders in business. She loves books by and about strong women. She says that these books inspired her and fueled her interest in business when she was in college. She is the Founder and CEO of Mavens & Moguls. Mavens & Moguls works with venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and business executives who seek expert marketing advice and innovative ideas without the overhead of a full-time marketing staff. Nurtured by Great People Paige considers that she has been fortunate to have great mentors, champions and role models throughout her career including former bosses, her father, senior women in organizations where she worked, but the person who has always encouraged and supported her as an entrepreneur and has her back every day is her husband. He started a company too so understands the journey of an entrepreneur and has been her sanity check and thinking partner every step of the way. Paige trusts his judgment and advice because she knows he 41 | March 2021 |
always has her best interests in mind. She considers herself to be very fortunate to have him in her corner. Greatest Driving Force Paige has tried to assemble the best marketing talent globally so that people think of Mavens & Moguls first and approach it to help solve all their marketing needs, being a one stop shop for all things related to marketing because Paige and Mavens & Moguls have access to the best people and ideas. Paige is like a conductor of a world class orchestra and Good Housekeeping seal of approval for all things marketing. She is the connector, cheerleader and engine that keeps the pipeline filled and things running smoothly. Since starting her business Paige has joined boards and volunteered at several organizations supporting women in business. She is a mentor to the next generation of women leaders and as a marketing consultant she can write articles, contribute to books, and speak at events to share her experience and lessons learned. Choosing “A” team People Paige has realized that people one starts with are not always the ones who you grow with. The hardest lesson she learned is getting rid of weaker and insecure people much earlier is very important. As soon as she let them go the culture got stronger and the bar higher. “A" team people like to be surrounded by other stars therefore she believes that it is important to hire slowly and fire insecure and weaker people quickly. She did not make the mistake of hiring and keeping weaker or insecure people again. She wishes she had known it even earlier though, but lesson learned for sure! ‘‘ The more you give the more you get. Utilizing Resources Wisely Paige also recommends not spending money on things like fancy brochures, letterhead, business cards, etc. She suggests putting one’s budget into things that help fill your pipeline with customers. She considers getting one’s URL and a website up and running as key. She created online stationery for proposals and invoices, ordered her cards online and made downloadable materials as leave behinds for people looking for more information to help her find clients more quickly. She believes that one’s story will evolve gradually. She advises to find reference customers quickly and there is plenty of time later to dress things up! ‘‘ Not Wasting a Crisis Paige continued to plant seeds during lockdown, pivoted to online meetings, podcasts, webinars, etc. and 42 | March 2021 |
just stayed connected to her network which she thinks always pays off in the long term. She is measuring productivity now by what she gets done, it is based on accomplishing goals not activity. Paige considers that getting through the crisis of the pandemic together intact will make everyone feel that they have been productive. She is of the opinion that being intact together through the crisis will help all to find a way to incorporate the lessons of gratitude, simplicity, friendship, and love into the new normal and she will be incredibly happy that they have not wasted the crisis. Paige considers that if we can hold on to the very best parts of this lockdown the world will be a better place for it. periodically to connect with humans more personally. She advises to give time for exercise, and she suggests practicing gratitude. She considers it is important to have impact on people’s lives and that has nothing to do with volume of activity. She believes that impact is about touching people in meaningful ways which may mean being less busy not more. Creating Uplifting Culture Collaboration is key to the culture of Mavens & Moguls of engaging its team and ultimately its success. Paige tries to set the tone upfront with one rule, when in doubt over-communicate. She considers that it does not matter whether one is in B2B or B2C, every business is P2P and connecting on a personal level is what matters most. Paige says that successful businesses understand their product or service is about more than the transaction, they are in the relationship business. She highlights that people connect with brands they know, like and trust and employees may switch jobs but if they have a great experience and relationship with one’s brand one can keep them connected by staying in communication. She advises to show them they are respected, loved, and needed. She believes that it is a smart investment to get this right. Balancing Self-care and Contribution Paige likes to have allocated some time in day for herself to exercise or just relax. A mentor once told her and she has come to appreciate and realize that to stay sane and be successful, “me time” is not a luxury or pampering, it is maintenance! Therefore, she prioritizes self-care so that later she can take care of others very well too. Staying healthy for her is about finding ways to unwind and relax as part of her day. She considers that it is about balance. She is a big fan of Tai Chi, but she also does Qigong, massage, acupuncture, knitting, reading, hanging out with friends, and watching TV to de-stress. Practicing Gratitude Paige specifically encourages her team to give oneself permission to say no to distracting things or people. She advises to disconnect oneself from technology Paige Arnof-Fenn, Founder and CEO Mavens & Moguls 43 | March 2021 |

Leaders Viewpoint DIVERSITY IN DIVERSITY IN LEADERSHIP LEADERSHIP By- Asil Attar AND IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL LEADERSHIP IN THE CURRENT TIME I grew up in a mixed heritage home, half Iraqi, half Indian. I was brought up in the UK, American educated, a global traveler, a nomad. My parents left the Middle East in the 1950's and settled in the US then later in the UK. My father travelled a great deal for work and as a fortunate consequence, I was able to experience many diverse cultures, geographies and most importantly people. and inclusion managers, that suddenly this is a hot topic. I simply do not understand this, because for me, it has always been part of who I am, how I live and how I lead. To think that you must consciously consider being diverse baffles me. I have always surrounded myself with different nationalities, points of view, respected the male and female opinion and hired equally based on merit and experience, without diversity you simply cannot advance. How can you cook an amazing meal without any ingredients, diversity is the spice you need in an organization? There is nothing more empowering than potentializing the capabilities of diverse teams, treating everyone with respect and fairly, ensuring that they recognize they are of valuable. When asked about my personal leadership style, my answer is always, Human, my leadership style is human and transformational. This means that every decision that I have ever taken in every leadership role I have ever held was centered around people; taking into consideration their culture, view point, customs, traditions and most importantly respect for who they are and where they come from. I am often asked how I achieve such rapid turnarounds and maintain their consistent success, it's not a secret, answer…I invest in my teams, hire the best in class, ensure I have an inclusive environment, am available It fascinates me to see that over the last few years, diversity and inclusion has landed on the agenda for companies, that businesses now employee diversity “Diversity shouldn't be an objec? e, or a quote for an individual or business, it's a way of life led by an innate respect for humanity.” Asil Atar 45 | March 2021 |
and accessible at all times, am on the ground as well as strategic and display my passion, integrity, ethics and respect at all times. the world of constant change we live in today. It is a form of authority earned within our communities and founded upon our reputation…..Social Leaders help an organization to thrive, by connecting the power of the community to the everyday challenges of work. Social Leadership is built upon humility, fairness, and kindness, but it's no soft form of power: it's a power that is earned and, because of that, it carries great weight. It is built upon trust. If you have every walked into any of my offices, there is always a consistent message blazoned across my walls, 'People are my number one asset'. I live by that rule, profits follow, trust me. The only way an organization can effectively survive, flourish, and succeed now more than ever is displaying empathy, humility and making diversity the number one priority. Most importantly you must have a leadership team and leaders that display these traits authentically. Writing statements for the press, publicizing your inclusive environment, is not the answer, actioning and exampling it daily to your business is. The reputation, I have gained in every business I have led is that of a respectful and genuinely inclusive leader, leading by my values, ethics and integrity. I could not agree more, after all for me it has and will continue to be about people centric not self- centric. My legacy has and will continue to be to create social impact and bring positive disruptive change. Cultural, social, and emotional intelligence must be at the heart of every organization no matter how small or large, without this you will quickly find yourself on your own. Today in a post covid world and now more than ever people are looking for motivation, positive impact, appreciation, and security. Hundreds of thousands have been furloughed, lost their jobs, livelihoods, and are in a space which they have never experienced. If you are one of those employers who has had to make those tough decisions, then your number one focus is on effectively and positively impacting your current workforce ensuring that they keep going despite the challenges, that you have their back so they in turn support you in these times, this means consistently communicating honestly and effectively to all your stakeholders. This is the time for social leadership remember as a leader you have a responsibility to everyone around you, your employees, customers, shareholders and the community, you are in a position of authority which means you must be the role model, encourage difference, empower others and foster their potential. I will quote the Humanitarian leadership academy* , who defined social leadership beautifully “Social Leadership is a style of leadership fit for the Social Age, 46 | March 2021 |
