3. ABOUTUNIVERSITY Earlier known as Alagappa University Karaikudi is a public state university. The university is almost 3 decades old and is presently headed by chancellor Draupadi Murmu and VC Mukul Narayan Deo. The university is located on the urban patch of Hazaribagh. 5. HISTORY Alagappa University was established in the year 1992 in Bihar by minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. From 1992 to 2000 the university was under the Bihar Government’s jurisdiction. However, in 2000 a new state Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar which led to the formation of the university. The university was established in Hazaribagh. It was the people of Hazaribagh who felt the need for a University. The Ranchi University is more than 100 km away therefore the need was real. Thus in 1990, the Bihar State Assembly approved the bill of setting up a university at Hazirabh. Therefore by virtue o the bill the university was carved out of Ranchi University and was thus set up. Furthermore, the university is named after the saint AcharayaVinobeBhave.
