5. HISTORY India gained its independence in 1947, however, the requirement of a central medical college and hospital was felt before that. The conceptual idea of establishing a new medical facility like Aiims was already in discussion and gained roots in the minds of then stalwarts. After much discussion Aiims was set for its establishment in CalcuttaIndia however then chief minister of Calcutta Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy expressed refusal of its establishment. Therefore the institute was settled in Delhi. Thus in 1952, the foundation stone of Aiims Delhi was laid by Queen Elizabeth II even after India’s independence. In 1956 a new bill was passed at the Lok sabha which later on became the AIIMS ACT. The bill was introduced By Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, who worked under the INC and Jawhar Lal Nehru to see the successful establishment of AIIMS was made possible. Since its establishment when only monochrome pictures were available AIIMS Delhi strongly made it into the colorful bold new world and shaped India’s future and present in many ways in the medicalspace.
