  1. What is Open Source and its Importance in Ecommerce Development?

  2. Why You Should Use Open Source Software Open source is everywhere. But what is it exactly? Open source as opposed to closed source software is well...open. By open, we mean that it's software that anyone can use for any purpose they choose. By comparison, a closed source product requires that you get a license and in most cases, they require that you pay for it.

  3. Open Source Software Example In addition, closed source software is typically not able to be modified to your own needs. This means for example that if you need a specialized version of say Microsoft Word, you are out of luck. Open source software typically allows you to rewrite the software as needed. A good way of thinking about open source software is that it's free, not as in free beer but as in freedom, the freedom to modify the software according to your own need. A good example of open source software is GNU Image Manipulation Program or GIMP for short. This software is considered a competitor to the closed source software Adobe Photoshop. Unlike Photoshop, anyone is free to modify the source code for GIMP as they see fit.

  4. Key Differences with Open Source Open source software licenses allow the user to use the software for any purpose they wish. However, some open software licenses require that if a user modifies the software in any way, they would have to share the modifications made to the code as well with the public at large.

  5. Why Consider Open Source Solutions For Business In the first place, open source software solutions often mean better security, since the source code is available to everyone, open source software development makes it easier to patch security breaches, while also fixing, updating and upgrading faster. Essentially, you have hundreds of developers all over the world looking at the code and trying to fix vulnerabilities as opposed to a closed source program which may have just a handful of developers working on it.

  6. Licensing Secondly, the software is not locked down by a licensing fee. Open source eCommerce development requires that all licenses of the software downloaded are transferred to the user downloading it, which allows anyone to redistribute it and makes open source integration easier.

  7. Development In addition, open source software doesn't necessarily die when the original developer decides to abandon the project. Others are able to pick up the baton and continue the development. For example, many businesses still rely on versions of Windows that are considered outdated and are no longer supported. This means effectively that businesses that rely on something like Windows XP are playing a game of Russian Roulette with their businesses, just inviting any hacker with malicious intent to damage their business.

  8. Is Open Source Always Free? As noted above, open source software is meant to be free as in having the freedom to change it according to your needs. However, that doesn't mean that it's free as in free beer. Indeed, many open source products require a payment in order to use them. A good example of this would be any premium WordPress plugin. By definition, all WordPress plugins must use the same license as WordPress. However, they can still charge money for the development work.

  9. Where Can I Find A Reliable Open Source Developer? One good example of a reliable open source developer is Chetu, a global developer of customized open source CRM solutions since 2000. Other developers may also be available and it's always a good idea to do your own due diligence before choosing a developer for your needs.
