  1. What Should Be The Selection Criteria While Choosing Tarps? A tarp is a large flexible sheet designed for specific purposes. For example, canvas tarps are used to stop the flow of water while plastic tarps are used to cut down the air supply. Multiple materials like muslin, PVC, plastic are available for the manufacturing of tarps. Nowadays, all the tarps are made fire-resistant by adding chemicals. Accordingly, they’re also used in the cinema halls as stage curtain or muslin backdrops. Because of multiple variants available in the market, it is very difficult for an individual to choose the best tarp available. Thus, let’s check out the selection criteria for choosing tarps: Rectify need: Rectification of need is the first process in choosing tarps. As there are many options available, the rectification of need helps in analysing the specifications. For example, there can be two needs. An individual can purchase tarps that allows air to pass through but not water or tarps allowing both of them to pass through. Here, treated canvas tarps help in passing air but not water (as they’re

  2. waterproof) but untreated canvas tarps allow both air and water. Because of this untreated canvas tarps are not widely used. Similarly, if an individual is looking for tarps that can help in cutting the air supply, he can go for plastic tarps. Waterproof tarps: Waterproofing is an important feature of tarps. While camping, campers use waterproof tarps to protect themselves from irregular weather conditions. However, as per the level of protection, different water-resistant tarps are available. The top three of them are listed below: Treated canvas tarps: Treated canvas tarps help in allowing the air to pass through but not water. Thus, they’re also called breathable tarps. They’re widely used by campers for protection against water. The sleeping bags are also manufactured using treated canvas muslin. Untreated canvas tarps:Untreated canvas tarps are not widely used. That’s because plain muslin is used in manufacturing without any use of additional chemicals. Because of bar bad material composition, they’re very cheap in comparison to the other options available. Plastic tarps: As the name suggests, Plastic tarps are manufactured using plastics. The composition of plastic doesn’t let the air of water pass through. Accordingly, they’re being used in reducing the spread of covid-19 in multiple ways. For example, plastic is used in manufacturing PPE kits and transparent doors for shopkeepers and cab drivers. Strength: Strength is an important criterion while using tarps. Canvas and plastic tarps are examples of low strength tarps. However, high- strength tarps like mesh tarps and PVC tarps are widely used in industries. They can handle the load easily and are not vulnerable to tears.

  3. Abrasion resistance: The ability of tarps to not split into two parts while a sharp object is used is called abrasion resistance. Vinyl and canvas tarps are highly abrasion-resistant. In comparison to this, plastic or polythene tarps are not abrasion-resistant. They’re easily torn without even using sharp objects. Corrosion resistance: The ability of tarps to not get damaged by sunlight and foreign materials is defined as corrosion resistance. The foreign materials highly affecting the tarps are sunlight, acids, oils, greases and mildew. Almost all the tarps are vulnerable to at least one foreign agent. Conclusion: The factors discussed above are to check whether the tarps can satisfy the need or not. Depending upon the personal usage there can be many factors affecting the tasks. However, the successful decomposition of the tarps should be the goal. For example, plastic and PVC tarps are not biodegradable. They are only recycled. Once they end in landfills, they’re not damaged for thousands of years. That’s why it is important to keep them away from landfills.
