  2. The Seychelles were discovered in 1502 during the second voyage of Vasco da Gamma in India. But evidence of earlier visits by Arab mariners has also been preserved. The British were the first of the Europeans to land on the archipelago: in 1609, the island was examined in detail and described by the expedition of Captain A. Sharpey. In the 17th-18th centuries, the islands served as a reliable and convenient refuge for pirates.

  3. In 1742, the governor of the French island of Ile-de-France (Mauritius) detached an expedition to explore the islands. After three expeditions of Captain L. Pico to the archipelago, in 1756 he was proclaimed the possession of France. The development of the archipelago by French settlers began in 1770, but significant settlements appeared only in 1794. During the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, the islands were occupied several times by the British. The English ownership of the islands was finally assigned to the Paris Peace Treaty of 1814.

  4. As a result, on June 28, 1976, the independent Republic of Seychelles was proclaimed as part of the British Commonwealth.
