2. AIM To play a proactive role in implementing smart solutions for school buses of a reputed school in Chennai.

4. Preparation We compiled an inventory of the available vehicles, mapped the routes, the driving time, and introduced trip sheets for a week. This information was then analyzed before we drew up a comprehensive solution to the requirements of this school.

5. Issues • Unorganised purchase/addition of vehicles to the fleet when on demand. • Improper and last minute rerouting on trip sheets. • Failure in attaining optimum fuel efficiency when analysed on vehicle to vehicle basis. • Lack of technological inputs.

6. Solutions Improve safety of children by real-time monitoring of routes, with automatic triggers. Facilitate real-time updates of bus location to parents and school authorities. RFID tracking to remain updated on embarking and disembarking students.

7. Solutions Bring in better route management by allocating routes that do not overlap each other. Optimise fuel efficiency by alert authorities of vehicle idling and over speeding. Preempt drivers from route deviations or circuitous routes to destination.

9. Installation Precedings We relied on our proprietary software and hardware interface to integrate the school bus fleet. All vehicles were outfitted with reputed model GPS Devices. We fixed the routes, the timings, the alerts and the triggers in the event of a deviation, overspeeding and idling for the vehicle. The driver was then despatched on a test run without students. The instructions were to deviate from the designated route midway, cross the speed limits and to finally leave the engine on idle for a longer time than necessary. The triggers alerted the authorities of the deviation, the speeding and idling. The next run included dummy runs with RFID cards.

10. Installation Precedings • Over a period two weeks, all the buses were fitted with the devices, and all parents were part of the network that disseminated information and notification about their children. • To simplify the process of inclusion of additional users to receive notifications, we introduced a system of self-login with a two-step password verification. • This dispensed with the need for time-consuming human intervention in the inclusion of new users.

11. Review On completion of six months, we conducted a review of performance to demonstrate the difference and benefits post-implementation.The school administration was delighted to see from their own records.

12. Review in Detail • The monthly fuel consumption was slashed by as much as 11%. • There were fewer delays in pickup and drop of children due to route optimization. • The number of calls that usually reached the school or the attendant in the bus seeking information about position was cut down by as much as 90%. • Maintenance schedules were timely and as a result, breakdowns were eliminated, except for a few punctures. • The school reserved one vehicle as standby at the school to cater to backup requirements, from the fleet that was pressed into service. This was achieved without affecting the trips, the timings or the comfort levels of the students.
